Week No. 25

During the week of March 10, 2014, ABC took first place across all key Adult demographics: AD18-34 (1.5/6), AD18-49 (1.9/6) and AD25-54 (2.3/6). Finishing No. 1 for the 2nd time in 3 weeks in Adults 18-49, ABC (1.9/6) outdelivered NBC by 12% (1.7/5), CBS by 19% (1.6/5) and Fox by 36% (1.4/4).  ABC aired 7 of the Top 20 TV shows in Adults 18-49, landing 5 in the Top 10 and delivering the Top 2 broadcast dramas for the 2nd straight week with “Resurrection” and “Scandal,” respectively: “The Bachelor: After the Final Rose” – No. 3 (No. 1 unscripted program), “Modern Family” – No. 6, “The Bachelor” – No. 7, “Resurrection” – No. 8, “Scandal” – No. 9 (No. 1 10:00 p.m. drama), “Once Upon a Time” – No. 14 and “Grey’s Anatomy” – No. 18. ABC’s “20/20” was the No. 1 newsmagazine in Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54, leading for the 7th consecutive week with young adults.

 

·         For the 3rd week in a row, the Net grew from the same week last year in Total Viewers (+12% – 6.5 million vs. 5.8 million) and Adults 18-49 (+12% – 1.9/6 vs. 1.7/5).

 

·         The only broadcaster up week to week in Total Viewers (+10%) or Adults 18-49 (+12%), ABC turned in its strongest non-Oscar week since November – since weeks of 11/25/13 and 11/18/13, respectively.

 

Monday

ABC hit a season high and won Monday night in Adults 18-49, beating NBC with “The Voice” and the series debut of “Believe” (3.5/10 vs. 3.4/10). 

 

·         ABC’s “The Bachelor: After the Final Rose” (10:00-11:00 p.m.) stood as Monday’s No. 1 TV show in Adults 18-49, upsetting NBC’s “The Voice” (3.8/11 vs. 3.7/11). With the show’s finale and the “After the Final Rose” special, “The Bachelor” was the No. 1 most social program on Monday (741,626 tweets).

 

“The Bachelor” (8:00-10:03 p.m. – 10.1 million and 3.3/9 in AD18-49):

Earning a strong second in its time slot to NBC’s “The Voice,” ABC’s “The Bachelor” finale spiked week to week in Total Viewers (+23%) and Adults 18-49 (+43%) to deliver season highs on both counts. The Bachelor won its 2-hour time period over “The Voice” in Adults 18-34 and key Women (W18-34/W18-49). Please Note: Last year’s finale did not face “The Voice.” It aired against “The Biggest Loser” on NBC.

 

“The Bachelor: After the Final Rose” (10:03-11:00 p.m. – 11.0 million and 3.8/11 in AD18-49):

Building on its lead-in (+15%) in the 10:00 p.m. hour, ABC’s “The Bachelor: After the Final Rose” dominated NBC’s series debut of “Believe” by 41% in Adults 18-49 (3.8/11 vs. 2.7/7). The ABC special was up year to year in Total Viewers (+2%) and held steady in Adults 18-49, drawing its biggest overall audience in 3 years – since 2011.

 

Tuesday

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (8:00-9:00 p.m. – 6.0 million and 2.1/7 in AD18-49):

During the 8 o’clock hour, ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” grew week to week in Total Viewers (+9%) and Adults 18-49 (+17%), while spiking 33% in Adults 18-34. In its time slot, the new ABC drama more than doubled the delivery of Fox’s “Glee” (2.3 million and 0.9/3) in Total Viewers (+161%) and Adults 18-49 (+133%). In addition, “S.H.I.E.L.D.” beat NBC’s “The Voice” to win the hour with Men 18-34 (+6% – 1.7/7 vs. 1.6/7) and finished as the No. 1 scripted series in its slot for its 15th-consecutive original telecast with young men.  

 

·         “S.H.I.E.L.D.” continued to improve the hour year to year, up by 31% in Adults 18-49 over the year-ago night with original programming. Season to date in the key young adult sales demo, the freshman series has boosted its time period by 60% for ABC.

 

“The Goldbergs” (9:01-9:31 p.m. – 4.4 million and 1.5/5 in AD18-49):

In the 9:00 p.m. half-hour, ABC freshman “The Goldbergs” continued to outdraw Fox’s “New Girl” (2.5 million and 1.3/4), leading by 1.9 million viewers and by 15% in Adults 18-49. The show gained 5% in Total Viewers week to week and held steady in Adults 18-49.

 

·         The Goldbergs” boosted its half-hour for ABC over the same night last year with original programming by 26% in Total Viewers and by 25% in Adults 18-49. 

 

“Trophy Wife” (9:31-10:00 p.m. – 3.0 million and 0.9/3 in AD18-49):

In the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC’s “Trophy Wife” was up by double digits week to week in Total Viewers (+15%) and Adults 18-49 (+13%). The ABC freshman comedy outdrew Fox’s freshman “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” by a best-yet margin of 20% in Total Viewers (3.0 million vs. 2.5 million). 

 

“Mind Games” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 2.7 million and 0.8/3 in AD18-49):

In the 10:00 p.m. hour, ABC’s “Mind Games” was the biggest week-to-week gainer on the broadcast nets, growing 33% in Adults 18-49 from the prior Tuesday.

 

Wednesday

For the 3rd straight week, ABC aired Wednesday’s No. 1 TV show in Adults 18-49, with “Modern Family” (3.4/10) continuing to increase its lead over Fox’s “American Idol” to a best-ever 42% (2.4/7), up from a 26% advantage the prior week and a 15% advantage two weeks ago. 

 

“The Middle” (8:00-8:30 p.m. – 7.5 million and 2.0/7 in AD18-49):

Despite facing the first week of Daylight Saving Time at 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Middle” was up for the 2nd-week in a row in Total Viewers (+3%) and Adults 18-49 (+5%) to deliver 5 week highs – since 2/5/14. held even week to week in Adults 18-49.

 

“Suburgatory” (8:30-9:00 p.m. – 5.4 million and 1.6/5 in AD18-49):

At 8:30 p.m., “Suburgatory” improved its half-hour year to year for ABC, up by 19% in Total Viewers and by 14% in Adults 18-49 over an original comedy on the same night last year (4.7 million and 1.4/4 in AD18-49 for “The Neighbors” on 3/13/13).

 

“Modern Family” (9:00-9:31 p.m. – 9.4 million and 3.4/10 in AD18-49):

More than doubling its Adult 18-49 lead-in at 9:00 p.m. (+113%), ABC’s “Modern Family” shot to the top of its half-hour and held even week-ago rating.  “Modern Family” drew its biggest audience in 5 weeks and hit its highest Adult 18-34 and Women 18-34 ratings since it began facing “Idol” in January.

 

“Mixology” (9:31-10:00 p.m. – 4.3 million and 1.5/4 in AD18-49):

In the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC freshman “Mixology” retained 88% of its week-ago Adult 18-49 rating.

 

“Nashville” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 5.1 million and 1.4/4 in AD18-49):

During the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s “Nashville” held even with its week-ago Total Viewer number and paced within 1-tenth of a rating point in Adults 18-49.  “Nashville” is ABC’s biggest percentage gainer this season via TV Playback, with originals spiking by 69% on average from L+SD to L+7 to deliver a 2.7 Adult 18-49 rating in the finals.

 

Thursday

For the 3rd week in a row, ABC ranked No. 1 on Thursday in Adults 18-34 and key Women (W18-34/W18-49).

 

·         ABC’s “Scandal” (2.8/8) was the No. 2 TV show of the night in Adults 18-49, behind only CBS’ top-rated “The Big Bang Theory.” 

 

“Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” (8:00-9:00 p.m. – 3.2 million and 0.8/3 in AD18-49):

Against the first Thursday of Daylight Saving time during the 8 o’clock hour, ABC’s “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” delivered solid retention of its week-ago numbers in Total Viewers (97%) and Adults 18-49 (89%). From 8:00-9:00 p.m., the ABC freshman drama topped NBC’s comedies by 19% in Total Viewers (3.2 million vs. 2.7 million for “Community”/”Parks and Recreation”).

 

“Grey’s Anatomy” (9:00-10:00 p.m. – 7.4 million and 2.3/7 in AD18-49):  

Nearly tripling its Adult 18-49 lead-in at 9:00 p.m. (+188%), ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” (2.3/7) continued to win its hour, beating Fox’s time period premiere of “American Idol” (+5% – 2.2/6). In fact, in its shift to 9:00 p.m., “American Idol” matched a series low for the 2nd week in a row among Adults 18-49. In addition, the ABC drama outdelivered “Idol” by 25% in Adults 18-34 (2.0/7 vs. 1.6/6). 

 

“Scandal” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 8.2 million and 2.8/8 in AD18-49):  

Building on its “Grey’s” lead-in among Adults 18-49 at 10:00 p.m. (+22%), ABC’s “Scandal” (2.8/8) towered over the final hour of the night, beating CBS’ “Elementary” by 65% (1.7/5) and NBC’s “Parenthood” by 133% (1.2/4). “Scandal” held even with its week-ago Adult 18-49 numberThe ABC drama was Thursday’s No. 1 most social TV program, gaining 3% week to week (320,869 tweets vs. 310,485 tweets) and pacing well ahead of runner-up “American Idol,” which had 53,087 tweets.

 

Friday

ABC won on Friday among Adults 18-49 (1.6/6) for the 3rd week in a row, beating all-original lineups on CBS by 23% (1.3/5), NBC by 33% (1.2/4) and Fox by 220% (0.5/2).  In fact, the Network led its 7th consecutive non-Olympic Friday.

 

·         ABC’s “Shark Tank” (2.0/7) and 20/20 (1.9/6) ranked as the No. 1 and No. 2 TV shows on Friday in Adults 18-49.   ABC’s “20/20” matched a season high in Adults 18-49, equaling a nearly 2-year high (since 3/30/12).  Itwas also once again the night’s No. 1 newsmagazine, outdelivering NBC’s “Dateline” in Total Viewers and key Adults (AD18-49/AD25-54).

 

“Last Man Standing” (8:00-8:31 p.m. – 4.7 million and 0.8/3 in AD18-49): 

At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s repeat “Last Man Standing” beat Fox’s time-period premiere of “Rake” by 60% in Adults 18-49 (0.8/3 vs. 0.5/2).

 

“The Neighbors” (8:31-9:00 p.m. – 3.5 million and 0.8/3 in AD18-49): 

ABC’s “The Neighbors” finished as the No. 1 comedy of the night in Adults 18-49 (tied with “Last Man Standing”), outdelivering Fox’s “Enlisted” by 60% (0.5/2 at 9:00 p.m.) and “Raising Hope” by 60% (0.5/2 at 9:30 p.m.). 

 

“Shark Tank” (9:00-10:01 p.m. – 7.5 million and 2.0/7 in AD18-49):

More than doubling its lead-in at 9:00 p.m. (+150%) in Adults 18-49, ABC’s “Shark Tank” beat out its closest competition in the hour by 25% (2.0/7 vs. 1.6/5 – NBC’s “Grimm”).  Season to date, “Shark Tank” is up double digits in Total Viewers (+12%) and Adults 18-49 (+10%) over the same point last year, trending as the series’ best-ever season

 

“20/20” (10:01-11:00 p.m. – 7.0 million and 1.9/6 in AD18-49):

For the 3rd week in row, ABC’s “20/20” dominated the 10 o’clock hour in Adults 18-49 (1.9/6), beating CBS’ “Blue Bloods” by 36% (1.4/5) and NBC’s “Hannibal” by 111% (0.9/3).  The ABC newsmagazine also won the hour for the 3rd straight week in the key Adult 25-54 news demo.  “20/20” went inside the very dark and very real world of “murder for hire.” “20/20” was up week to week by  6% in Adults 18-49 to equal its top rating in nearly 2 years – since 3/30/12.  Up year to year in Total Viewers (+20%), Adults 18-49 (+7%) and Adults 25-54 (+5%), “20/20” is on track to deliver its most-watched season in 4 years – since the 2009-10 season. 

 

 

Saturday

With an encore of the “Resurrection” debut episode, the premiere of “Nightline Prime” and “20/20 Saturday,” ABC ranked No. 1 on Saturday in Adults 18-49 (0.8/3-tie). ABC’s “20/20 Saturday” hit season highs and stood as the night’s No. 1 TV Show in Adults 18-49 (1.0/3) and Adults 25-54 (1.5/4).

 

“Resurrection-R” (8:00-9:00 p.m. – 3.9 million and 0.7/3 in AD18-49): 

During the 8:00 p.m. hour, a rebroadcast of the “Resurrection” debut episode added another 3.9 million viewers to its audience.  In fact, data through just the first 3 days of TV playback released by Nielsen on Friday showed an average of 17.0 million viewers had already watched the episode.   

 

“Nightline Prime” (9:00-10:00 p.m. – 2.9 million and 0.7/3 in AD18-49):

From 9:00-10:00 p.m., the premiere of “Nightline Prime” drew ABC’s biggest audience in the time period in 2-1/2 months – since 12/28/13. 

 

“20/20 Saturday” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 5.2 million and 1.0/3 in AD18-49):

Dominating the 10 o’clock hour, “20/20 Saturday” turned in its best numbers this season and generated ABC’s strongest non-sports performance in the time period in nearly 1 year in Total Viewers and key Adults (AD18-49/AD25-54) – since 3/30/13. In the hour, “20/20 Saturday” defeated CBS’ “48 Hours” by 49% in Total Viewers (5.2 million vs. 3.5 million), by 67% in Adults 18-49 (1.0/3 vs. 0.6/2) and by 67% Adults 25-54 (1.5/4 vs. 0.9/3).

 

Sunday

ABC led its Sunday competition for the 3rd week in a row among Adults 18-49, beating Fox by 22% (1.8/5), CBS by 47% (1.5/4) and NBC, with the premieres of “Believe” and “Crisis,” by 47% (1.5/4). 

 

·         For the 2nd consecutive week, ABC’s “Resurrection” was Sunday’s dominant No. 1 broadcast in Adults 18-49 (3.1/8) and “Once Upon a Time” finished No. 2 (2.4/7). “Resurrection” will be the week’s No. 1 broadcast drama for the 2nd week in a row in Adults 18-49.

 

“America’s Funniest Home Videos” (7:00-8:00 p.m. – 6.4 million and 1.5/5 in AD18-49):  

Returning to original for the first time since January (1/26/14), ABC’s “America’s Funniest Home Videos” took second in the 7:00 p.m. hour with viewers and young adults.  The show held 100% of its last original 6 weeks ago in Adults 18-49.

 

“Once Upon a Time” (8:00-9:00 p.m. – 7.8 million and 2.4/7 in AD18-49):  

Winning the 8 o’clock hour for the 2nd straight week in Adults 18-49, ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” held steady with its week-ago rating. The show was up 4% its year-ago performance (2.3/6 on 3/17/13). The ABC drama was the No. 1 most social series on broadcast Sunday night (79,373 tweets).

 

“Resurrection” (9:00-10:01 p.m. – 11.2 million and 3.1/8 in AD18-49):  

Building on its lead-in by 29% at 9:00 p.m. in Adults 18-49, ABC’s “Resurrection” (3.1/8) more than doubled NBC’s time-period premiere of “Believe” (+107% – 1.5/4) in the hour, as well as CBS’ “The Good Wife” (+138% – 1.3/3). “Resurrection” retained a strong 82% of its huge week-ago premiere Adult 18-49 rating. Excluding only last week’s big debut, the new show drew ABC’s largest series audience in the hour in 3 years – since 3/6/11 with “Desperate Housewives.”

 

“Revenge” (10:01-11:00 p.m. – 6.2 million and 1.7/5 in AD18-49):  

During the 10:00 p.m. hour, ABC’s “Revenge” (1.7/5) was the No. 1 drama among Adults 18-49, beating NBC’s debut of “Crisis” (+6% – 1.6/4) and CBS’ “The Mentalist” (+31% – 1.3/4). “Revenge” improved its hour year to year by 70% in Adults 18-49, topping original drama programming on the same night last year (“Red Widow” = 1.0/3).
