THE PLAYERS THEATRE BLURS THE LINES BETWEEN BLACK AND WHITE WITH HISTORICAL FICTION “NOT OUR TIME”
Sarasota, FL – The Players Theatre is proud to announce the production of the 2014 Players New Play Festival Winner, “Not Our Time”, playing from August 20-23. Written by Bernard Yanelli, the story is inspired by the life of former NFL great Henry Lawrence and is set in the rural South in 1969. “Not Our Time” is an imagined account of the civil rights era that explores the issues surrounding desegregation and the choices that four students (two African American and two white) have to make as they navigate their way through a web of hope, confusion, deception, and honest misunderstandings. As the story unfolds, one of the students, an African American football star, must choose between what he wants for himself versus what his best friend, teacher and coach want for him.
A 20 minute talkback is scheduled with Hall of Famer Henry Lawrence just after the Saturday, August 22nd performance.
The Players holds its New Play Festival in June each year. With a goal of celebrating and fostering new, local plays, submissions are accepted January through May 1st and finalists are chosen shortly thereafter. Designed as a five day festival, the five finalists are each given a night to have their play read live on stage by an auditioned cast of readers. At the end of the five days, a panel of judges chooses a winner, which will become a fully produced play during The Players following season.
