This month’s WCW Dana Pounds is resting and recovering from a marathon she just ran. Well, yeah, that’s a challenge, isn’t it? But is that her story? No, it’s just a part of her story. Dana ran in the Robinson’s Preserve Marathon despite the fact she has battled and continues to battle the effects of cancer. The cancer caused her to lose a leg in the process.
That changes the story a bit, doesn’t it? But there’s even more. Dana, along with her husband, Jim, founded Nature’s Academy, a nonprofit in Bradenton that teaches
children about science. It’s a natural for Dana who is a marine biologist as well as an extremely dedicated and indeed inspiring person.
“The finish line is an illusion,” she notes about that recent marathon. Instead, a finish line is, “something we invent in our minds.” Life, she explains, “is not about winning, but about participating in your dreams.”
I can’t help but think that the girls at Girls Inc. and the Girl Scouts should know Dana’s story. We older “girls” can also find lots of inspiration from this incredible woman. Click here to read her article as it appears in WCW (it will launch as a PDF – be patient!). To find out more about Dana’s work, click Nature’s Academy.
