BRENTANO STRING QUARTET &
Since its inception in 1992, the Brentano String Quartet has appeared throughout the world to popular and critical acclaim and in 2012 provided the key music for the film A Late Quartet. Brentano appears at 92Y for a three-concert series in which each concert features a newly commissioned work. In the second concert, they are joined by 2013 MacArthur “Genius” fellowship winner and Grammy-nominated composer-pianist Vijay Iyer. Mr. Iyer has been described by The New Yorker as one of “today’s most important pianists…brilliantly eclectic.” His piano quintet Time, Place, Action, a 92Y co-commissioned work, receives its New York premiere alongside works by Beethoven. Brentano String Quartet BEETHOVEN: String Quartet in D major, Op. 18, No. 3 Tickets $25 (age 35 & under), $35, $52, $62 This concert will be live-streamed on www.92yondemand.org/livecast PIANIST BENJAMIN HOCHMAN Monday, March 10, 7:30 PM Pianist Benjamin Hochman presents a recital of variations with the world premiere of a personal commission by Israeli-American composer Tamar Muskal. Mr. Hochman’s passion for the compositional technique and championship of contemporary composers is demonstrated throughout the program with additional works by Berio, Knussen and Rzewski. Mr. Hochman’s commitment to contemporary composers extends to his recordings. In November 2013 he released Homage to Schubert for the Avie label pairing two late Schubert piano sonatas alongside musical tributes by György Kurtág and Jörg Widmann. With its fine acoustics and intimate setting, SubCulture produces a unique concert experience that will allow Mr. Hochman to make a personal connection with the audience through commentary from the stage. CONTACT! series at SubCulture, pianist Yefim Bronfman returns to 92Y’s Kaufmann Concert Hall for a program spanning genres and time periods. He is joined by members of the New York Philharmonic for chamber works by Schubert, Bartók and Brahms. Yefim Bronfman is the New York Philharmonic’s 2013-2014 Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence and this concert is a co-presentation with the New York Philharmonic.
