Young Russian Master Pianist Daniil Trifonov Highlights Rachmaninoff in Concert and Recording This Season

 Rachmaninov Variations (Deutsche Grammophon)

“Few artists have burst onto the classical music scene in recent years with the incandescence of the pianist Daniil Trifonov.”

– New York Times

Having scored both a Grammy nomination and an ECHO Klassik Award with Trifonov: The Carnegie Recital, his first recording as an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, on August 28 Daniil Trifonov – “without question the most astounding young pianist of our age” (The Times of London) – celebrated the release of his second, Rachmaninov Variations. Pairing his accounts of Rachmaninoff’s Variations on a Theme of Paganini, Variations on a Theme of Corelli, and Variations on a Theme of Chopin with his own composition, Rachmaniana, Trifonov’s album was recorded last March with Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra, an ensemble that during the Russian composer’s lifetime premiered and championed many of his works.

When Trifonov played Rachmaninoff with the Chicago Symphony this spring, the Chicago Tribune recognized his exceptional way with the composer’s music:

“From the commanding thunder of his entry, and the idiomatic fluidity with which he and the orchestra conversed throughout the concerto, you knew something special was going on. Coruscating technique Trifonov has in abundance, but there is also an acute musical sensitivity that makes every note speak directly to the listener. His tone was always bright, full, forward and beautiful; he seemed incapable of producing an ugly sound, even when roaring up and down the keyboard at full speed.”

The Russian pianist continues to emphasize his compatriot’s concertos in the 2015-16 season. With the New York Philharmonic, he headlines fall’s “Rachmaninoff: A Philharmonic Festival,” joining Cristian Macelaru, Neeme Järvi, and Ludovic Morlot for performances of the Second, Third, and Fourth concertos and the “Paganini Variations,” as well as collaborating with members of the orchestra on the Trio élégiaque in his first appearance at the 92nd Street Y (Nov 11–28). Rachmaninoff’s Fourth is the vehicle for Trifonov’s subscription debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Nézet-Séguin (Oct 1–4), and Rachmaninoff’s Third for his debuts with the Berlin Staatskapelle under Pablo Heras-Casado (April 11 & 12) and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic under Franz Welser-Möst, with whom he anchors the prestigious Nobel Prize Concert (Dec 8). It is also in Rachmaninoff that Trifonov joins Leonard Slatkin and the Orchestre National de Lyon (April 1–3), Valery Gergiev and the Munich Philharmonic (Dec 14–16), the Philharmonia Orchestra at London’s Royal Festival Hall and on tour in the UK and Iceland (Oct 8–19), and the Czech Philharmonic on its three-city tour of Japan (Oct 31–Nov 2).

Beyond Rachmaninoff, Trifonov showcases the music of two more of his countrymen, launching the new season with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s First with the London Philharmonic under Vladimir Jurowski at Milan’s La Scala (Sep 7), and playing Prokofiev’s Third for his debut with the Montreal Symphony under Kent Nagano, reprised on their extensive North American tour (March 8–26), and Prokofiev’s Second for dates with the Orchestre National de France (Jan 14) and the London Symphony Orchestra under Alan Gilbert (April 7).

An artist of breathtaking poise and theatricality,” it was during a previous collaboration with the LSO that “Trifonov tapped into Chopin’s sense of freedom at the piano, and his joy in its potential” (The Telegraph, UK). In the coming season, he reprises Chopin’s Second for concerts with the San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas (Sep 25 & 26), besides undertaking Liszt’s First with the Pittsburgh Symphony at the orchestra’s home (May 5–8) and on its eleven-stop North European tour (May 20–June 3).

Also an accomplished composer, it is with his own concerto that the young pianist launches the Pittsburgh Symphony’s new season (Sep 18–20). This follows the work’s triumphant premiere at the Cleveland Orchestra, where the Plain Dealer was moved to marvel: “Even having seen it, one cannot quite believe it. Such is the artistry of pianist-composer Daniil Trifonov.

Distinguished by their “ecstatic quality” (Financial Times) and by the “feeling of active discovery” (New York Times) he conjures, Trifonov’s solo recitals are already widely held to be in a class of their own. Over the coming season, in music by Bach, Brahms, Chopin, Schubert, and Rachmaninoff, the Russian pianist makes his Los Angeles solo recital debut at Walt Disney Concert Hall (Feb 26), returns to California’s La Jolla Music Society (Feb 28), performs in Tokyo and Kyoto (Oct 28 & 29), and embarks on an extensive and high-profile European recital tour that includes stops in the principal venues of Vienna, Berlin, Geneva, Paris, Rome, Lisbon, Barcelona, and Amsterdam (Jan 9–Feb 22). He also looks forward to a residency at London’s Wigmore Hall, where he gives duo recitals with his former teacher, pianist Sergei Babayan (Feb 14), and superstar violinist Gidon Kremer (Feb 12), with whom he also appears in Cologne (Feb 10) and with whom he recently gave the “performance of a lifetime” (Los Angeles Times) at L.A.’s Disney Hall.
