Nutrition labels

Bites of advice from 92Y nutritionist Daniela Neman, RD, CSO, CDN

Coming soon: changes to nutritional labels. What do you need to know?

The FDA has recently proposed changes to nutritional labels. Wondering how this would affect some of our favorite foods, we went straight to resident nutritionist Daniela Neman for the facts.

When are nutritional labels changing?

These changes are proposed by the FDA for now; it could take up to a year or longer to see the new labels on your favorite foods.

What should we expect to see on the new nutritional labels?
Some of the changes on the proposed label include the display of more realistic serving sizes, the emphasis of calories in a larger type and the addition of “added sugars.”

Is there something I should pay more attention to on this new label?

As always, it is vital to first determine the serving size of the food you are eating. Understanding what the updated portion sizes are will clarify the nutritional facts.

What are you hoping the results will be after this change takes effect?

The hope is that the new labels will make it easier for consumers to understand what they are consuming and will empower them to make healthier food choices. It is also crucial to understand that nutrition-label reading is just a small component of healthy eating; the focus should be to consume more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein rather than decoding food labels on the back of processed foods.

Personal Training

Summer is approaching!

92Y personal trainer Jake Allyne on how to shake up your workout routine

Get active! Add some high-intensity intervals to your workout to burn more fat in a shorter amount of time. This can be as simple as picking three to five body-weight exercises, such as

  • pushups
  • squats
  • chair dips
  • jumping jacks
  • crunches

The goal is to see how many rounds of 20 reps you can complete in 10 minutes

Don’t forget to nutrient up! Fuel your body with the proper nutrients to recover and prepare for your next workout.

Try a class that’s packed with high-intensity interval training, like our Cardio Bootcamp. See a full schedule of our classes here
