Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe presents ‘Barbecue and Blues’
Noted blues artist Sammy Blue, who currently stars in ‘Spunk,’ will present two concerts on May 22 & 23
SARASOTA, FL – The celebrated “Crown Prince of the Blues,” Sammy Blue – who stars as “Guitar Man” in Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe’s current production of “Spunk” – will present two concerts on Friday and Saturday, May 22 and 23 at the WBTT theater. Patrons are invited to enjoy a barbecue dinner, catered by Nancy’s Barbecue, prior to the show (an additional charge will apply).
Blue will present some of his most revered blues tunes, and tell stories about his experiences with some of the famous people he has worked with.
Blue was nicknamed the “Crown Prince of the Blues” by the late Muddy Waters because he exemplifies both traditional and contemporary genres of blues. Over the past 40 years, Sammy has performed on four continents as a band member, soloist, and opening act for such greats as: Taj Mahal, Muddy Waters, Jerry Garcia, Memphis Slim, and the The Wailers, among many others. He served as musical technical advisor and appeared in NBC’s critically acclaimed TV series “I’ll Fly Away,” for which he wrote and performed the song, “Delta Shuffle” for the pilot. His original compositions can be found in the documentary “Blues Stories” and the film “Mending Hearts.” Most recently, he performed in Clint Eastwood/Warner Brothers 2013 movie “Trouble with the Curve” and had the lead role in the 2014 independent film “We Be Kings,” about the Bluesman I.B. King.
Tickets are limited – advance ticket purchase is recommended. Show time is 8pm for both shows; the barbecue dinner begins at 6:00pm. Cost for the show plus dinner is $48; cost for the concert only is $29.50. Call the WBTT Box Office at (941) 366-1505 and then press “1” for reservations.
