NEW YORK, NY — Violinist and artistic director Gil Morgenstern’s acclaimed Reflections Series International is pleased to announce its 2014-2015 season at Avenues: The World School (259 Tenth Ave.). This is Reflections’ second season at Avenues, presenting four engaging concerts throughout the school year. The relationship between Reflections and Avenues is particularly appropriate as both seek to integrate learning across subject areas in a globally aware setting and the Avenues New York campus, adjacent to New York’s Highline Park, is the perfect venue for Reflections’ sophisticated but relaxed performances.

After Reflections Series International’s tremendously successful inaugural season at Avenues: The World School, Gil Morgenstern has been named Artist-in-Residence for Interdisciplinary Studies beginning with the 2014-2015 season. This unique yearlong residency, during which Morgenstern will work with students and faculty of all academic subjects, is a key part of the school’s mission to “graduate students who are artists no matter their field.” The position is a natural outgrowth of Morgenstern’s previous collaborations with faculty and students at Avenues, including the interdisciplinary Rashomon Project. Of his appointment, Morgenstern says: “I’m extremely excited about deepening my relationship with the visionary leadership and faculty at Avenues. Together, I hope to establish programs of interdisciplinary synthesis between academic subjects, fostering creativity and a passion for exploration.”

In the season-opening concert, Johannes Brahms: Before, During, & After on Thursday, October 2 at 7:30pm, Morgenstern, pianist Reiko Aizawa, and cellist Ole Akahoshi will explore the artistic and personal relationships that contributed to Brahms’ Piano Trio in B Major, while bringing to life the musical references of preceding composers – Schubert, Beethoven, Bach and Schumann – that lie at the heart of this great work. In The Voice of the Violin on Thursday, December 11 at 7:30pm, Morgenstern and pianist J.Y. Song will highlight the singularly expressive range of the violin and the diverse manner in which composers of different times and cultures have exploited it. On Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 7:30pm, RSI will present Coupled Perceptions, a concert investigating how adding another artistic discipline to music alters the audience experience. Morgenstern will be joined by dancer/choreographer Mary Cochran and pianist J.Y. Song, as well as dancers Michael Novak (Paul Taylor Dance Company), Anna Schön, and street dance “popper” James “Floats” Fable. The final concert of the 2014-2015 Reflections season on Thursday, May 21 at 7:30pm is titled Nature’s Bounty, and will present music and text inspired by personal encounters with both natural and man-made landscapes, performed by Morgenstern, violinist Harumi Rhodes, violist Kathryn Lockwood, cellist Inbal Segev, and percussionist Yousif Sheronick.

Reflections Series International presents solo and chamber music along with works of different artistic disciplines, engaging its audiences in combinations of music, text and images. Through its unique contextualization of historical artistic styles and events of their time period, its innovative programming entertains and enlightens the 21st century audience. Using both existing and original works, and with the collaboration of a superb ensemble of creative and performing artists representing all art forms, Reflections programs present works that both reflect upon one another and invite the audience to reflect anew on universal themes.

The 2014-2015 season includes four engaging concerts. Tickets are now available for purchase.

JOHANNES BRAHMS: BEFORE, DURING, & AFTER
Thursday, October 2, 2014 at
7:30pm
Gil Morgenstern, violin and artistic director
Ole Akahoshi, cello
Rieko Aizawa, piano

The opening program of the 2014 – 2015 Reflections Series International season features Johannes Brahms’ Piano Trio in B Major, written in 1854 but completely revised in 1891. While both artistic and personal relationships contribute to a good deal of discussion and even personal intrigue surrounding the trio, this program will bring to life the musical references of preceding composers (Schubert, Beethoven, Bach and Schumann) that lie at the heart of this great work. Rounding out the program will be his ever-popular Violin Sonata in d minor, and Brett Dean’s Hommage à Brahms (2014). Joining Morgenstern will be cellist Ole Akahoshi and pianist Rieko Aizawa.

THE VOICE OF THE VIOLIN
Thursday, December 11, 2014 at 7:30pm

Gil Morgenstern, violin and artistic director
J.Y. Song, piano

The Voice of the Violin continues Gil Morgenstern’s showcasing of the singularly expressive range of the violin and the diverse manner in which composers have exploited it. This program will take us around the globe, from east to west and from the Baroque to contemporary styles. Highlights include an elegant Sonata by Jean-Marie Leclaire, who effectively combined the Parisian and Italian Baroque styles, Beethoven’s grand Violin Sonata in G Major, filled with great humor though written during a time of deep despair, The Stream Flows by the Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng, and the angular modernity of Elliott Carter’s Riconoscenza per Goffredo Petrassi. Joining Morgenstern on this musical voyage will be pianist J.Y. Song.

COUPLED PERCEPTIONS
Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 7:30pm

Gil Morgenstern, violin and artistic director
Mary Cochran, special guest choreographer and dancer
J.Y. Song, piano
with Michael Novak, Anna Schön, and James “Floats” Fable

How does adding another artistic discipline to music alter our experience as audience members? Do we hear or listen to the work differently? Can the whole be greater than the sum of its parts? Are we able to absorb all the information bombarding our brains? In this concert, Gil Morgenstern is joined by dancer/choreographer Mary Cochran and pianist J.Y. Song in an exploration of these questions through music and dance. The musical works will first be performed as they were originally written, giving the audience the opportunity to become familiar with them. These works will then reappear over the course of the program, reinterpreted with original choreography, giving the audience the chance to experience them as completely different works. Joining Morgenstern will be Mary Cochran (formerly with Paul Taylor Dance Company), Michael Novak (currently with Paul Taylor), Anna Schön, and street dance “popper” James “Floats” Fable.
