U.S. strikes gold at FIVB Long Beach Grand Slam  

The U.S. beach volleyball teams of Sean Rosenthal and Phil Dalhausser, and Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross, swept the men’s and women’s gold medals at the FIVB Grand Slam in Long Beach, California. The men’s duo defeated Poland in three sets, while the women earned a two-set victory against Brazil.

Cycling
Team USA posted 11 top-10 finishes – highlighted by silver medals from Alise Post in women’s supercross and Corban Sharrah in the men’s time trial – at the UCI BMX World Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Meanwhile, the U.S. collected 15 medals – with three athletes earning overall world cup titles – at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup in Segovia, Spain.

The U.S. men’s foil team defeated Great Britain, 45-31, to finish fifth, while the women’s epee team placed sixth at the FIE Senior World Championships in Kazan, Russia.

Elena Pirozhkova was one of four U.S. medalists at the FILA Golden Grand Prix Finals in Baku, Azerbaijan, defeating Yurika Ito of Japan, 7-4, to capture the 63 kg. gold medal.

Spotlight On

USA Basketball announced a 13-player roster for the 2014 U.S. Men’s Select Team, which is scheduled to train with the men’s national team during its training camp, held July 28-31 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Members of the U.S. Select Team include eight players with prior USA Basketball experience – four of which played on the 2013-14 National Basketball Association All-Rookie first team.

Brady Ellison clinched the men’s recurve title at the 2014 U.S. Target Championships…Sarah Hughes and Kelly Claes won the bronze medal at the FIVB U21 World Championships…U.S. track and field athletes earned 21 medals to top the gold medal charts at the IAAF World Junior Championships…U.S. crews took home five medals at the FISA World Rowing U23 Championships.

Around the USOC

Individuals representing Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., joined USOC leadership in Colorado Springs, Colorado, for a briefing on the potential U.S. bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. USOC executives will continue visits and further collaborative discussions prior to making a decision on whether to bid.
