TWO NEW RELEASES FROM THIRD MAN RECORDS OUT TODAY: WHY THE MOUNTAINS ARE BLACK (GREEK VILLAGE MUSIC 1907-1960) DOUBLE LP & SUN SEEKER GEORGIA DUST 7″ SINGLE

Today is a pretty exciting day here at Third Man Records! Not only did we officially release the delightfully creepy music video for The Dead Weather’s next single “Impossible Winner,” but we also have not one, but TWO new releases out in this big, beautiful world of ours.
The first is a project that has inspired us more than we could have predicted when we signed on to be its label home: Why The Mountains Are Black (Greek Village Music: 1907-1960). This two disc collection of primal and unhinged Greek village music often sounds more like free jazz or doom folk with its feral and trance-like grooves, and is the result of years of research, fieldwork and collecting by Christopher King-Grammy-winning producer, sound-engineer, curator and writer.  Gathered together from his private 78 rpm archive, King has compiled the most mind expanding and libido inducing song and dance music from the rural hinterlands of mainland Greece and its islands. These are unissued songs recorded in Athens, New York, and Chicago in the first part of the 20th century, and the cover art is the work of R. Crumb and Susan Archie.  A beautifully thought-provoking if not radical essay on this music by King accompanies the lavish package. Not simply for historians or collectors of long gone sounds, this compilation is intended to push the limits of what we have come to expect of music, its purpose and indeed its origin. You will experience a profound musical transformation immediately upon listening.
Our second release today is the freshest and shiniest nugget of solid gold from Nashville’s unlikely chamber-pop upstarts Sun Seeker. Their debut single  “Georgia Dust” paints the dreamscape you wish you fell into every night when you close your eyes and leaves you yearning for a full-length LP that does not yet exist. No, for now, you get but two floats down the lazy river of pedal steel stardust and teenage falsetto fantasies.  The A-side is the soundtrack to the movie you decided was your favorite before you had seen too many to have a favorite. The B-side “No One Knows” is just another A-side in disguise. Wear this 7″ out with us while we wait for more from this band… and catch them on the road in the coming weeks as they travel the Southeast on tour.
