Trinity Wall Street Names Avi Stein as Associate Organist and Chorus Master

Trinity Wall Street today named noted keyboardist and early music specialist Avi Stein as its new Associate Organist and Chorus Master, beginning June 1. Stein is no stranger to Trinity, having played an integral part in its musical offerings for several years now, as the principal continuo player for the Grammy-nominated Trinity Baroque Orchestra. In his new position, Stein will serve as the principal organist for all Trinity concerts and services.

“I am honored to join one of New York’s great musical institutions, and I look forward to becoming a member of this inspiring community,” noted Stein.

Trinity Wall Street’s Director of Music and the Arts, Julian Wachner, added, “Avi is an excellent colleague and a brilliant musician versed in a number of musical styles. His expertise in early music further strengthens Trinity’s commitment to this field, and I’m delighted to welcome him to this new position.”

Described after his Carnegie Hall debut as “a brilliant organ soloist” (New York Times), Avi Stein regularly performs throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, and Central America. He is an active continuo accompanist who frequently collaborates with the Boston Early Music Festival, Clarion Music Society, and Bach Vespers NYC. He has directed the young artists’ program at the Carmel Bach Festival and has conducted a variety of ensembles including the Opéra Français de New York, Opera Omnia, and the celebrated 4×4 Baroque Music Festival. Stein studied at Indiana University, Eastman School of Music, University of Southern California, and, as a Fulbright scholar, in Toulouse, France. He teaches continuo accompaniment at the Juilliard School and vocal repertoire at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music.

One of the oldest, largest and most vibrant of all Episcopal parishes, Trinity Wall Street is located in the heart of Manhattan’s financial district, where it has created a dynamic home for great music. Serving as Director of Trinity’s Music and the Arts program – as well as principal conductor of the Trinity Choir, the period-instrument Trinity Baroque Orchestra and the contemporary-music ensemble-in-residence NOVUS NY – Julian Wachner also oversees all liturgical, professional, and community music and arts programming at Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Chapel. The music at Trinity ranges from large-scale oratorios to chamber music, and from intimate a cappella singing to jazz improvisation. All concerts at Trinity Wall Street are professionally filmed and webcast live at www.trinitywallstreet.org.
