Summer is in full swing and that means medici.tv is once again making the very best of the festival season available to classical music lovers around the globe, giving them a virtual best seat in the house to exciting live events from Aix-en-Provence, Verbier, Salzburg, Annecy and Operalia. These can even be accessed on the go via medici.tv’s application for iOS and Android devices – the gateway for music lovers to enjoy the world’s greatest classical festivals anywhere and anytime. The festival season on medici.tv begins live July 16 with Trauernacht: The Angel’s Hand, a dramatic staging of J.S. Bach cantatas by Katie Mitchell in collaboration with conductor Raphaël Pichon. Among the other summer highlights is the July 18 opening concert of the Verbier Festival, with piano icon Martha Argerich and conductor Charles Dutoit. On August 3, medici.tv broadcasts Sven-Eric Bechtolf’s production of Don Giovanni (starring Ildebrando D’Arcangelo and Luca Pisaroni) live from the Salzburg Festival. Also live from the Salzburg Festival are Schubert’s Fierrabras (directed by Peter Steinandstarring Michael Schade in the title role, on August 25) and other events to be announced soon. On August 19, it’s the first of a series of webcasts from the Annecy Classic Festival, with Yuri Temirkanov, Denis Matsuev and Yuja Wang among the many celebrated performers. And live on August 30, the world’s best young singers will compete in the finale of Plácido Domingo’s Operalia, from the Los Angeles Opera. Aix-en-Provence

 

Webcast from Aix-en-Provence on July 16 on medici.tvis Trauernacht: The Angel’s Hand, a dramatic staging of J.S. Bach cantatas by British director Katie Mitchell (who was acclaimed in Aix-en-Provence two years ago for her staging of George Benjamin’s Written on Skin, also available on medici.tv), in collaboration with conductor Raphaël Pichon. They aim to “explore the depths of these cantatas in order to celebrate their theatricality and living energy balanced against the omnipresence of death.”

 

Verbier Festival

 

For the eighth year in a row, medici.tv will be presenting a cornucopia of events from the Verbier Festival in Switzerland. The July 18 opening concert of the festivalfeatures the great Martha Argerich as the soloist in Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 – a work that she hasn’t played in 10 years – with longtime collaborator Charles Dutoit conducting the spirited Verbier Festival Orchestra. Other Verbier highlights on medici.tv include several concerts featuring the acclaimed young pianist Daniil Trifonov. The Russian will perform a solo recital of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Schumann on July 20. He will also be performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 under Yuri Temirkanov on July 24 and joining violinist Leonidas Kavakos in a duo recital on July 29. The following day (July 30), a concert by Senegalese singer, percussionist, songwriter, composer, and actor Youssou N’Dour will be web-cast live from the festival. Other star artists from Verbier on medici.tv include Evgeny Kissin, Steven Isserlis, Mikhail Pletnev, Denis Matsuev, Jaap van Zweden, Joshua Bell, Marc-André Hamelin, Kristjan Järvi, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Mischa Maisky, Pretty Yende, Renaud and Gautier Capucon, Jan Lisiecki and many more.

 

There will be operatic events from Verbier on medici.tv as well. On July 21, Dutoit conducts Berlioz’s Damnation of Faust, with singers Ruxandra Donose, Ramón Vargas and Willard White. On July 26, it’s Marc Minkowski on the podium for Beethoven’s Fidelio, with Evgeny Nikitin, Brandon Jovanovich and Ingela Brimberg. On July 27, Daniel Harding will conduct both Puccini’s Il Tabarro and Acts III-IV of Verdi’s Don Carlo, with the casts including Alexey Markov, Barbara Frittoli and Vittorio Grigolo. And on August 2, Gábor Tákacs-Nagy leads Mozart’s II re pastore,with Rolando Villazón and Anthony Gregory.

 

Salzburg Festival

 

In August, medici.tv will webcast some of classical music’s greatest performers live from the Salzburg Festival in Austria, beginning August 3 with a production of Don Giovanni by Sven-Eric Bechtolf. The cast features some of the top Mozart singers of our day, including Ildebrando D’Arcangelo (Don Giovanni), Luca Pisaroni (Leporello) and Lenneke Ruiten (Donna Anna), with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Christoph Eschenbach. On August 25, medici.tv webcasts Schubert’s three-act opera Fierrabras, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher and directed by Peter Stein. Michael Schade will sing the title role, along with Julia Kleiter (Emma) and Dorothea Röschmann (Florinda). Other performances from the Salzburg Festival will also be available, and more information will be coming soon on medici.tv.

 

Annecy Classic Festival 

 

Extensive coverage by medici.tv of the Annecy Classic Festival in France (for the fourth year in a row) starts August 19, with Zoltán Kocsis conducting the St. Petersburg Philharmonic in Dvorák and Liszt, with pianist Denis Matsuev – co-artistic director of the festival – playing Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Other highlights include Robert King conducting Handel’s Messiah (Aug 21), pianist Roger Muraro playing Wagner and Liszt (Aug 23) and two further concerts with Yuri Temirkanov leading the St. Petersburg Philharmonic: an all-Russian program featuring cellist Alexander Kniazev and pianist Yuja Wang (Aug 28), and a program of Rossini, Brahms and Elgar again featuring Matsuev (Aug 29).

 

Operalia

 

Operalia is the annual international competition for young opera singers founded by Plácido Domingo in 1993. The competition has helped launch the careers of such artists Joyce DiDonato, Joseph Calleja, Rolando Villazón, Elizabeth Futral, Ana María Martínez and José Cura. This year’s finale will be streamed live by medici.tv from the Los Angeles Opera on August 30.
