The Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota Presents

“Legends of the Sea with Bill Schustik”

October 12 • 4 p.m.

Musician, historian, and folklorist Bill Schustik will perform a concert of sea shanties as a benefit for All Faiths Food Bank’s BackPack Kids Program.

(Sarasota, FL) Musician, historian, and folklorist Bill Schustik will perform a concert of sea shanties in “Legends of the Sea,” Sunday, October 12, 4 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 3975 Fruitville Road, Sarasota. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at www.uusarasota.org/concerts/tickets.php or at the door on the day of the concert. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the All Faiths Food Bank’s BackPack Kids Program, which provides meals for underprivileged children. For more information, call 941-371-4974 or visit www.uusarasota.org.

Informed by a life on the road, Schustik, often referred to as the “American Troubadour,” weaves a keen sense of drama and a deep love for traditional American lore into his performances. This charismatic singer, musician and storyteller plays the guitar, banjo, harmonica, dulcimer, mouth harp and concertina magnificently as he sings, yodels and narrates in his unique performances.

“This is a terrific opportunity to attend an inspired concert and help feed hungry children at the same time,” says Don DeMaio, concert coordinator. “Bill performed at our church on July 6 to a standing ovation and he now returns for a full concert to benefit the All Faiths Food Bank’s Backpack Program.” DeMaio adds that Schustik’s sea shanties explore a “place of danger, adventure, and romance. The sea has enchanted people throughout history and has been depicted over and over in song and story. In this concert, we’ll hear about the courageous men who went down to the sea in ships and their worldwide exploits.”

Schustik has performed for three U.S. presidents, appeared both on and off Broadway, authored two full-length ballets with Edward Villella and Edward Verso, and written a show about the American Civil War, “Shiloh Hill,” which was produced by Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. He also starred in a highly successful performance of his original show, “The Civil War in Song and Legend.” He’s performed in more than 2,000 towns and villages throughout the United States.
