Carrie’s Match Has Reached the Goal of Raising $100,000 for the Museum’s Manatee Care Program!

THANK YOU
to all who participated.

Snooty with (insert) Carrie Yearwood and her mother.

We are very happy to let you know that we have completed Carrie’s Match. That translates to $100,000 for the Museum’s Manatee Care Program. And that’s a lot of lettuce!

Manatee fan Carrie Yearwood very generously offered to match all donations to the Museum’s Manatee Care Program up to a total of $40,000 and then another donor was inspired to add $10,000 to the challenge, providing $50,000 in matching funds toward food and care for Snooty, Ace and Myakklemore, the two rehabilitation manatees staying with Snooty. The three manatees will eat almost 75,000 lbs. of romaine lettuce and vegetables this year at a cost of nearly $75,000, and life support costs (electricity and water) total $55,000 annually for the Aquarium. Since very little state or federal funding is available for the Museum’s Manatee Care Program, we must rely on caring people (like you). Thank you!

“I would like to thank each and every one of you who joined me to support the South Florida Museum’s Manatee Care Program. Together, we have accomplished a great deal to help Snooty and the rehabilitating manatees. Our collective impact is definitely to be celebrated!

Experiences seeing Snooty at the Museum when I was young are very fond memories for me now and helped me care about the environment and manatees in a much bigger way. My husband and I are incredibly happy to be able to make a difference for the manatees now and to make it possible for other people to create similar memories and inspiration.”

~ Carrie Yearwood

More than 400 donations were received in all, ranging from $1 to $10,000. These contributions are helping us take the best possible care of Snooty, Ace and Myakklemore. Food, life support, water filtration, specialized equipment and skilled staffing are critical components of caring for manatees, and expenses for the Aquarium and participating in the Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Partnership exceed $250,000 each year. This funding has significant impact on all of the Museum’s operations.

If you have any questions about Carrie’s Match, please contact Development Director Martha Wells at  [email protected] or by phone at (941) 746-4131, ext. 35 .
Museum Director of Living Collections Marilyn Margold and Snooty offer their thanks.
