Regnier selected as new county fire chief

SARASOTA COUNTY – The Sarasota County Fire Department has a new leader, as Michael Regnier has received a conditional offer to become its new fire chief following a nationwide search.
Regnier has served as the interim chief since May 2014. A third-generation firefighter, he first joined the department in 1988 as a firefighter/EMT/paramedic, rising through the ranks as a lieutenant, battalion chief, acting assistant chief for EMS operations and assistant chief for fire operations.
“We are excited to have someone of Chief Regnier’s vast experience and knowledge officially serving in this role,” said County Administrator Tom Harmer. “Throughout his career he has been involved in the day-to-day operations of our fire department, both on the administrative side and in the field, and we expect a seamless transition from his interim role.”
Emergency Services Director Rich Collins said Regnier’s roots with Sarasota County will be a benefit to residents as well as his fellow firefighters.
“After more than 25 years as a part of our team, Chief Regnier’s familiarity with the department will be a great asset,” Collins said. “He understands the challenges of providing first-class fire and EMS services that meet the needs of our community.”
As chief, Regnier will oversee a department of more than 500 firefighters, EMTs and paramedics who protect Sarasota County.
Regnier holds degrees in fire science from Columbia Southern University and Manatee Community College. He has attained state and national certifications and holds numerous accreditations for firefighting and paramedic instruction.
“I’m honored to continue to work with the men and women of the Sarasota County Fire Department and to serve the community in this permanent role,” Regnier said. “We have a great team, and I’m looking forward to being a part of moving the department forward in the future.”
