(Sarasota-Manatee) The interactive, multimedia traveling exhibit, “Anne Frank: “A History for Today,” will be displayed April 17-May 27, at Selby Public Library, 1331 First Street, in Sarasota. On loan from the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect in Manhattan, this multimedia exhibit tells the story of Anne Frank against the background of the Holocaust and the Second World War. This exhibit is free and sponsored by The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee in collaboration with Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources, Sarasota County schools, and Embracing Our Differences. For more information about this exhibit, please contact Orna Nissan at [email protected] or 941-552-6305.

“Anne Frank: “A History for Today” shows images of Anne Frank’s childhood in Frankfurt and in Amsterdam, and portrays the rise of the Nazis, the persecution of the Jews and the way the people responded to what was happening. To enrich this experience, the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect has designed educator workshops and supplementary materials and docent training for area students, educators and community volunteers.

“Visitors to Selby Library will live Anne’s story vicariously—from her birth in 1929 through her death in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in March 1945,” says Orna Nissan, director of Holocaust Education and Israel Programs for The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee. “Family photographs contrasted with images of historical events will reflect events prior to, during, and after Nazi domination, creating an emotional and educational experience that will also challenge visitors to reflect on the effects that prejudice, hatred, violence—and most important, apathy—can have on society.”

According to Sarabeth Kalajian, Sarasota County’s director of Libraries and Historical Resources, “The library is the perfect place for these kinds of exhibits, as our libraries are beacons for the community to learn, engage in conversation, and build for the future.”

Working in tandem with local schools and educators, Embracing Our Differences is providing free transportation to bring students to both the 2017 Embracing our Differences exhibit in Island Park and the Anne Frank exhibit as part of the organization’s Make A Day of It! program.
