Welcome the New Year as Michael Francis leads the orchestra in a Viennese and waltz-themed program with Ravel’s vivacious Valses nobles et sentimentales, Johann Strauss, Jr’s lyrical Wiener Blut (Vienna Blood), Richard Strauss’ luscious Suite from Der Rosenkavalier and the TFO premiere of H.K. Gruber’s outrageous Charivari with its raucous and humorous treatment of both the polka and waltz. The concert also features cellist Maximillian Hornung in his TFO debut performing Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, which also includes a waltz among its eight variations in this tour de force for solo cello and orchestra.

Arrive early to hear musical guests share inside stories about the music and the composers for all Masterworks concerts. Pre-concert conversations begin one hour before curtain time in the concert hall.

Michael Francis and the orchestra are joined by pianist Gilles Vonsattel making his TFO debut performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 on a program with Mozart’s Symphony No. 39. The program offers a wonderful mix of musical complements and contrasts to Mozart with Stravinsky’s charming chamber concerto Dumbarton Oaks. The concert also includes the TFO premiere of composer John Cage’s revolutionary Third Construction featuring just four percussionists performing on a unique collection of instruments.
