The Curtis Institute of Music Appoints Kathryn Bezella as Vice President of External Affairs and Patron Engagement

PHILADELPHIA,PA—November 6, 2015—The Curtis Institute of Music has appointed Kathryn Bezella as vice president of external affairs and patron engagement. A member of the school’s senior management team and leader within the advancement department, Ms. Bezella will leverage all channels and platforms—in print and online—to engage internal and external audiences in support of integrated recruitment, audience-building, fundraising, patron engagement, and lifelong-learning goals for the school. Among other areas, she is responsible for brand development, digital strategy, communications, public relations, patron services, and marketing.

Ms. Bezella comes to Curtis from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where she most recently served as director of strategy and communications, and where she was interim director of MBA admissions from October 2013 to March of 2015. At Wharton Ms. Bezella specialized in leading data-driven marketing and communications efforts, and worked closely with the Vice Dean of the MBA Program on strategic initiatives, including brand management, enrollment management, and continuous improvements to the programs, technologies, metrics, and planning processes that enhance and measure student experience.

Ms. Bezella joined Wharton in 2008 as a member of the MBA Admissions and Financial Aid Office, where she directed marketing and communications and also oversaw women’s recruitment. In that role, she contributed to significant increases in the number of women enrolled in the MBA Program between 2008 and 2010.

“Kathryn brings a wealth of experience to Curtis that will be especially valuable as we implement an ambitious ten-year strategic direction for the school,” said Roberto Díaz, president and CEO. “With her appointment, our leadership team is complete.” Added Kristen Loden, senior vice president of advancement, “We are very pleased to welcome Kathryn at this important moment in the life of the school and know that her talents will help us build Curtis’s presence locally, nationally, and internationally.”

Ms. Bezella earned her graduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her undergraduate degree from Barnard College, where she was a recipient of Columbia University’s Dolan Prize in Musical Performance and pursued intensive study of classical voice, including performances with Opera Theater of Lucca in Italy.

“Curtis is unparalleled in the world of music, and I am tremendously honored to join such an extraordinary institution,” says Ms. Bezella. “Anyone who has ever stood in Rittenhouse Square and heard the echoes of Curtis musicians practicing their art can understand why I am so thrilled to become part of the leadership team.  I’m excited to bring all I’ve learned at Wharton to Curtis—what a privilege.”

Drawing upon 90 years of artistry, the Curtis Institute of Music pairs tradition and innovation, educating exceptionally gifted young musicians as artist-citizens who engage a local and global community through music-making of the highest caliber. Each year 175 students come to Curtis, drawn by a tuition-free, performance-inspired learning culture. In this intimate environment, they are nurtured by a celebrated faculty and inspired by the school’s distinctive “learn by doing” approach, offering more than 200 concerts each year in Philadelphia, as well as performances around the world through Curtis on Tour.

“One of the world’s finest music academies” (BBC Culture), Curtis reaches global audiences through Curtis Performs (curtis.edu/CurtisPerforms), the school’s dedicated HD performance video site. Online music courses and Summerfest programs offer lifelong learners further ways to listen, explore, and learn. And students hone 21st-century skills through social entrepreneurship programs that bring arts access and education to the community.

The extraordinary young musicians of Curtis graduate to join 4,000 alumni who have long made music history. Each season leading orchestras, opera houses, and chamber music series around the world feature Curtis alumni. They are in the front rank of soloists, composers, and conductors and hold principal chairs in every major American orchestra. Curtis graduates are musical leaders, making a profound impact on music onstage and in their communities. To learn more, visit www.curtis.edu.
