FLIGHT PATHS: SEASON FINALE
Rachmaninoff + 3 premieres
June 3-4 at the DiMenna Center
The Chelsea Symphony concludes its eleventh season, FLIGHT PATHS, on Saturday, June 3, at 8:00 PM and Sunday, June 4, at 2:00 PM at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, 450 West 37th Street. Tickets are available now on Eventbrite!

Both concerts showcase two beloved works by Sergei Rachmaninoff: the composer’s orchestral arrangement of Vocalise and his autumnal masterpiece Symphonic Dances. The latter work – Rachmaninoff’s final score – is a poignant retrospective on the musician’s career. Rachmaninoff includes coded references to several of his early Russian compositions, but wrote the piece for the Philadelphia Orchestra, his favorite ensemble in his adopted homeland. These performances represent the culmination of The Chelsea Symphony’s 2016-17 FLIGHT PATHS, an exploration of music by immigrants and visitors to the United States.

More information can be found on our website or follow the link to Eventbrite for advanced purchase tickets for both concerts for $25 unassigned seats in premium reserved areas. General admission tickets are also available at the door for a suggested $20 donation.

Join us for a celebratory wine reception following our Sunday matinee performance.
We look forward to seeing you for our season finale concerts this weekend!

Seth Bedford, composer and narrator
Ms. Rubinstein’s Beauty (World Premiere)
Based on the eponymous children’s book by Pep Montserrat, this piece sets the story of two kind outcasts who find the beauty and grace in each other.
Michael Blancaflor, vibraphone
Frank Picarazzi: Keyboard Concerto (World Premiere)
Saturday, June 3 only
This world premiere performance is a showpiece for vibraphone that is both lyrical and virtuosic.
Melissa Kritzer, bassoon

Decruck: Scherzo Fantasque (U.S. Premiere)
Saturday, June 3 only
Decruck’s music is experiencing a revival at the hands of TCS Co-Artistic Director Matthew Aubin and championed by bassoonist Melissa Kritzer, among others. This work draws inspiration from the classical scherzo, French cabaret song, and improvisatory traditions.

Sara Sherman, piano
Rebecca Steinberg, trumpet
Shostakovich: Concerto in C minor for Piano, Trumpet, and String Orchestra, op. 35
Sunday, June 4 only
Shostakovich described the work as “heroic, spirited, and joyful,” but the composer wrote the piece in perilous circumstances: he had rankled Soviet officials with his satirical opera The Nose, and was acutely aware of the need to please the authorities with his newest piece.
