| NEW YORK – On May 12, the Attacca Quartet will present the final concert in its ambitious, six-year long project covering “The 68,” the complete cycle of 68 string quartets composed by Joseph Haydn.
The performance will take place on Thursday, May 12 at 7:30 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (3 West 65th Street), with a pre-concert discussion with the quartet at 7:00. The program will include Opus 1, No. 1; Opus 42; Opus 103; and Opus 76, No. 5.
Says the quartet of the cycle: “Over the years, we have explored a variety of string quartets greatly ranging in styles, sounds, and complexity. As we attempt to understand these most abstract of works, we have discovered the importance of looking to the roots of their composition to more fully realize what inspired so many composers to create such a fantastic repertoire for this genre. What better way to do this than to play the complete string quartets of the man who started it all, Franz Joseph Haydn?”
The Attacca will also perform their acclaimed arrangement of Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross in the Crypt underneath the Church of the Intercession, Harlem on June 8 as part of Unison Media’s Crypt Sessions series (www.deathofclassical.com). Their recording of the work was hailed as “excellent” by The New York Times, while Gramophone called it a “triumph in every respect.” |

About the Attacca Quartet
First Prize winners of the 7th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in 2011, top prizewinners and Listeners’ Choice Award recipients in the 2011 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, and winners of the Alice Coleman Grand Prize at the 60th annual Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition in 2006, the internationally acclaimed Attacca Quartet has earned a place as one of America’s foremost young classical ensembles. Praised by The Strad for possessing “maturity beyond its members’ years,” they were formed at the Juilliard School in 2003 and made their professional debut in 2007 as part of the Artists International Winners Series in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. From 2011 to 2013 they served as the Juilliard Graduate Resident String Quartet, and for the 2014-2015 season the Attacca Quartet was named the Quartet in Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The quartet consists of Amy Schroeder, violin, Keiko Tokunaga, violin, Nathan Schram, viola, and Andrew Yee, cello.
