Richard Capes

Richard is an especially talented artist who manages to convey in his work historical significance, whimsy, humor, fantasy, truth and a feeling of connection with whatever he draws.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he loved to paint and draw as a child. He began his lessons at the Old High Museum of Art. Being encouraged by his teachers, Richard attended the University of Georgia and attained his Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Art Education.

He has received many grants with study-travel programs in countries such as Mexico, Guatemala and Italy to experience the art and culture of the people. Richard shared his knowledge and expertise as an assistant professor at the University of Southern Mississippi and Morehead State University. In Sarasota, Richard opened the Cape Studio of Art & Design in 1974. Over the years his works have been featured in many one-man shows and group showings throughout the southeastern United States.

Richard’s love for Siesta Key is apparent in his drawings which appear in his book Richard Cape’s Drawings Capture Siesta Key. In his own words: I have a passion for using a variety of materials in each and every work of art. Exploring to discover the next visual statements, I create art rich, with the expression of color, texture, line and mood.
