ARTS POWER: Building Community through the Arts; Arts and Cultural Alliance presents a smART Talk Luncheon featuring special guest Janet Carl Smith from Chicago

A wonderful afternoon was shared learning more about the arts in Sarasota.  A guest speaker shared what they do in Chicago to promote art in their city.   It became obvious that for a city the size of Sarasota, we have an amazing assortment of art to offer our residents and guests and we have incredible volunteers who contribute countless hours to make sure that ART continues to be an important part of our community.   Wonderful ideas were shared, great food enjoyed (catered by the Sarasota Yacht Club) and a lovely afternoon was enjoyed making new friends and exchanging ideas.

Building Community through the Arts

Arts and Cultural Alliance presents a smART Talk Luncheon featuring special guest Janet Carl Smith from Chicago

(Sarasota, FL) — The Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County will host a smART Talk titled ARTS POWER: Building Community Through the Arts. The luncheon will take place at Sarasota Yacht Club on February 20, 2014 at 11:30am. Guest speaker for the event is Chicago’s Ms. Janet Carl Smith. Tickets are $45 ($35 for Alliance members) and can be purchased over the phone by calling (941) 365-5118 x301.

Janet is a must-see speaker for anyone interested in building community through the arts,” says Jim Shirley, Executive Director. “Hailed as ‘one of Chicago’s most skilled and imaginative administrators for the arts,’ she is a dynamic leader who during her 32 years as Deputy Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for the City of Chicago, helped shape the creation of many of the great collaborations that built Chicago’s vibrant cultural community.”

Ms. Smith is an arts advocate, advisor and connector who promotes the arts as an essential part of life in Chicago. Currently chairing the Council on the Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Education at the University of Chicago and serving as the Vice Chair of the Arts Alliance of Illinois, she has spoken widely on the important role of the arts, innovation and creativity in corporate and civic dialogue and on cultural tourism.

As Deputy Commissioner of the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs until her retirement in January 2011, Ms. Smith built support for the arts over thirty two years by managing free public exhibitions and performances. In addition to cultural programming oversight at the Chicago Cultural Center, she directed a range of city-wide collaborative programs to promote Chicago’s cultural resources and support the development and success of local artists and arts organizations.
