(Bradenton FL) —State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Fine Art Gallery features the exhibit, “This Miserable Kingdom,” Steven Katzman’s photographic survey documenting the people of the Pojoaque Pueblo in New Mexico, January 31-April 2, 2014. An opening reception, with the artist, is Friday, January 31, 6-8 p.m. The reception will begin with an artist’s talk, followed by a Q&A with the audience. Special guest speaker is Jacob Viarrial, a Pojoaque leader who served as Katzman’s guide on the reservation. The Fine Art Gallery is located at 5840 26th St. W. in Bradenton. For more information, call Joe Loccisano, gallery manager, at 941-752-5225.

Katzman, who lives in Sarasota, is a self-taught photographer whose longtime interest in political science has influenced his photographic journey. Most of his photographs exemplify the late 20th-century post-modernist notion that art should be political in nature. Katzman’s artistic expressions inspire his viewers to contemplate each photograph to arrive at its ultimate message. For more information about the artist, visit www.stevenkatzmanphotography.com.

“I am one of the few white men who have been allowed to document life on the Pojoaque reservation since Edward S. Curtis spent time there in 1905,” says Katzman, explaining that his project was approved by the Pojoaque Tribal Council. “I believe the exhibit will compel the viewer to question the human condition. Where are we going—as individuals and as a nation? This question is often lost in the cultural abyss of our ‘miserable kingdom,’ polluted by the onslaught of racism, sexism, bigotry, and indifference.”

Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday. The gallery will be closed March 2-9, 2014, for spring break.
