Starlite Players presents “Social Savvy” on August 18-19-20-21

Actors explore aspects of the laughable struggle to fit in

SARASOTA, FL: We all have to find our way through the social landscape. Unfortunately some don’t do it quite so well as others and the results can be laughable. In “Social Savvy,” a collection of four short comedies, Starlite Players explores unusual situations that take place in fairly usual settings: a suburban home, a controlling mother’s kitchen, an advertising agency and a theater director’s rehearsal. “Social Savvy” runs on Thursday through Saturday, August 18-19-20, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, August 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the casual, intimate theater upstairs at the Starlite Room (starlitesrq.com), 1001 Cocoanut Avenue. All four plays are presented every evening.

Tickets are $17.50 and include the four plays as well as a 15% discount on an optional pre- or post-show dinner at The Starlite Room. For show tickets and information: www.starliteplayers.com, [email protected], and 941.587.8290 (1 p.m. to 5 p.m.) Also see the Starlite Players Facebook page. For dinner reservations: 941.702.5613. (Please note the spelling of “Starlite.”)

The four comedies, represented by the attached photos, are:

Mark My Worms

“I’ve got a bun. … Don’t make me hoot.” On the instruction of their director (Valen McDaniel, not pictured), noted actors Mason (Ross Boehringer) and Gloria (Ana Maria Larson) rehearse a scene from a newly discovered play by the deceased, world-class absurdist LaSalle Montclare. The script is full of typos that make no sense but they must perform the odd play exactly as written, with unpredictable results. David Nields directs “Mark My Worms,” a comedy by Cary Pepper, as part of the Starlite Players production “Social Savvy,” running August 18-21 at Sarasota’s Starlite Room.

Galoshes

“You have to wear galoshes to go out whenever it might rain,” Martin (Michael Democko) tells his distant cousin Pam (Katy McBrayer), who rejects the bizarre mandate from Michael’s mother (Betty Robinson, not pictured). Robert Brophy wrote “Galoshes” and Cory Boyas directs this comedy as part of the Starlite Players production “Social Savvy,” running August 18-21 at Sarasota’s Starlite Room.

Putt-Putt

Advertising agency executive Dexter (John Durkin, center) is excited but Brian (Mark Shoemaker) and Debra (Diana Shoemaker) are horrified at a proposal by one of their team (Ross Boehringer, not pictured)– a new development idea for a Biblical/Christian-themed putt-putt (miniature golf) course. Louise Stinespring directs “Putt-Putt,” a comedy by George Sapio that is part of the Starlite Players production “Social Savvy,” running August 18-21 at Sarasota’s Starlite Room.

Man in the Basement

When a suburban wife (Andrea Dovner, not pictured) discovers that a homeless man has been living in her basement, her sister (Carolyn Zaput) runs right over (mud pack and all) to discuss the matter with her sister’s husband (Rodd Dyer). Cory Boyas directs “Man in the Basement,” a comedy by Arlene Hutton (known to family and friends in Bradenton as Beth Lincks). It’s part of the Starlite Players production “Social Savvy,” running August 18-21 at Sarasota’s Starlite Room. (PLEASE NOTE CASTING CHANGE. Andrea Dovner will play the role of Wife.)

Starlite Players stages an evening of short, unpublished comedies for one weekend each month and has presented 45 plays since its debut in July 2015. Its focus is on theater professionals from the Tampa Bay area. Jo Morello, Inc., is the producer. In addition to the Starlite Room, sponsors include the Jazz Club of Sarasota, one of the most active jazz societies in the country, and Kobernick-Anchin-Benderson, Sarasota’s only rental senior community.
