2015 PROGRAM OVERVIEW

OPERA

Contemporary music and art combine in the world premiere of Paradise Interrupted by visual artist, designer, and director Jennifer Wen Ma, who is known internationally for her visual installations and her work on the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and composer Huang Ruo (Dr. Sun Yat-sen). Marrying Chinese tradition dating back to the Ming dynasty with Western idioms, the libretto by Wen Ma and Ji Chao tells the story of a dreamer who ventures into a vast garden that will spring forth from the Memminger Auditorium’s empty stage. Paradise Interrupted will be performed by celebrated Chinese singer Qian Yi (The Peony Pavilion) and four Western-trained male singers. The Festival’s Director of Orchestral Activities John Kennedy will lead a chamber orchestra blending Western and Chinese instruments. Paradise Interrupted is co-commissioned and co-produced by Spoleto Festival USA and Lincoln Center Festival.

The world premiere of a new Spoleto Festival USA-commissioned performance edition of Francesco Cavalli’s Veremonda l’amazzone di Aragona will be performed in the first staging of this baroque opera in over 350 years—and first American performances—in the Dock Street Theatre. Conductor and early music specialist Aaron Carpenè uncovered Cavalli’s autograph score in Venice’s Marciana Library and from this created the new edition that will be brought to vivid life by director Stefano Vizioli—director of the 2013 Spoleto Festival USA double-bill of Mese mariano and Le villi—and revered Italian artist Ugo Nespolo. First performed in 1652 in Naples to celebrate the Spanish capture of Barcelona and end of the Catalan revolt, the opera tells of the Spanish King and Queen’s siege of the Moorish fort on the Rock of Gibraltar with the plot including passionate love stories and comical mistaken identities while also exploring gender equality and the use of sexuality in the pursuit of power. Members of the early music ensemble New York Baroque Incorporated will be led by Carpenè. American mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux will sing the title role of Veremonda and Italian soprano Francesca Lombardi Mazzulli will sing the role of Zelemina, the Queen of Gibraltar, in their Festival debuts. The cast will also feature Joseph Barron, Jason Budd, Steven Cole, Brian Downen, Michael Maniaci, Andrey Nemzer Raffaele Pe, Céline Ricci and Danielle Talamantes.

THEATER

Shakespeare’s Globe makes its Spoleto Festival USA debut with a new production of Romeo and Juliet directed by Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole and Tim Hoare. Based in London’s rebuilt Globe Theatre that opened in 1997, the company is known for its authentic yet bold productions. It has since become one of the most popular visitor destinations in the UK and gained an international reputation for performance excellence under its first Artistic Director Mark Rylance and Dromgoole, who has held the position since 2005. Romeo and Juliet will run for 19 performances in the Dock Street Theatre and will be the first American performances of this production.

Canada’s 2b theatre company also makes its Festival debut with the play When It Rains in the Emmett Robinson Theatre at College of Charleston. A combination of dark comedy, social satire, and heartbreaking drama, the play follows the fortunes of two couples, posing the question: if the biblical Job was an atheist and beset with successive misfortunes, would anything be tested in him? Written and directed by Anthony Black, the on-stage action is enhanced by inventive projection and lighting design. The play has had acclaimed runs at the 2014 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in New York.

Italy’s famed Carlo Colla and Sons Marionette Company delighted Festival audiences with its 2010 production of Cinderella and returns with another classic tale, Sleeping Beauty, described by The New York Times as “. . . simply a gorgeous and glorious spectacle.” Featuring 165 meticulously handcrafted marionettes, hand-painted scenery, and intricate costumes, the story is told in English and enhanced by excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s ballet score. Performances will be in the Emmett Robinson Theatre at College of Charleston and a special children’s ticket price will be offered.

A thousand-year-old performance tradition from Vietnam comes to the Festival for the first time with the debut of the Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre. Performances weave together fast-paced and fantastical traditional tales played out by puppets that dance, skip, and glide over the water’s surface. The action is manipulated by puppeteers who are hidden from view, and accompanied by live musicians performing on traditional instruments. A special outdoor pool and stage will be built in the College of Charleston Cistern Yard for these performances; special children’s prices will be offered.

PHYSICAL THEATER

Australia’s Casus Circus will make its Spoleto Festival USA debut with its acclaimed show Knee Deep that has catapulted the company onto the international circus scene. The members of Casus bring a wealth of experience having performed with ensembles including Circa, Legs on the Wall, Briefs, and Circus Oz. Knee Deep has been performed around the world, including at the Edinburgh Festival, and features acrobatics and aerial stunts while also being heralded for bringing a raw emotional edge and beauty to the stage.

DANCE

Scottish Ballet has built a reputation for taking classic stories and creating groundbreaking works, hallmarks showcased in its internationally acclaimed production of A Streetcar Named Desire to be performed in the College of Charleston Sottile Theatre over opening weekend. Director Nancy Meckler and choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s production maintains the complexity of Tennessee Williams’s original form, using physical vocabulary to tell the story of Blanche DuBois, Stanley, and Stella. The work is set to a score by Peter Salem incorporating the sounds of New Orleans jazz.

Two acclaimed dance ensembles, Trisha Brown Dance Company and Shen Wei Dance Arts, return to the Festival in 2015. Trisha Brown Dance Company will perform four works: If you couldn’t see me, Rogues, PRESENT TENSE,and the iconic Set and Reset, featuring sets and costumes by Robert Rauschenberg and music by Laurie Anderson in the Emmett Robinson Theatre at College of Charleston. Shen Wei Dance Arts will perform its celebrated work Map set to selections from Steve Reich’s The Desert Music, and a new work called Untitled # 12 originally conceived for a museum performance at Art Basel Miami Beach. The work will have its first theatrical performance at the Festival and feature Shen Wei’s recent series of large-scale abstract paintings as part of the set design in the College of Charleston Sottile Theatre.

The 2015 Dance Series is sponsored by BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.

MUSIC

Director for Choral Activities Joe Miller will conduct five Westminster Choir performances of three programs. In the first program the ensemble explores its sonic capabilities through works celebrating inspiration and creation: Urmas Sisask’s Oremus is paired with Eric Whitacre’s Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine, followed by Monteverdi’s passion Si ch’io vorrei morire and the opening chorus of J.S. Bach’s Cantata 79. Two performances of this program will be held at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul. A second program to be performed twice in the College of Charleston Sottile Theatre pairs two works composed nearly 400 years apart: David Lang’s Pulitzer Prize-winning The Little Match Girl Passion and Giacomo Carissimi’s Jephte. The Little Match Girl Passion will feature the US premiere of choreography by Pontus Lidberg for two dancers in which he reimagines the little match girl not as a starving child, but as an everywoman longing for human contact. Lang’s passion recasts Han Christian Andersen’s tale in the format of J.S. Bach’s monumental St. Matthew Passion. For the third program Joe Miller will conduct a one-night-only performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Westminster Choir, Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus, Taylor Festival Choir, and instrumentalists from New York Baroque Incorporated and the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra in the College of Charleston Sottile Theatre on June 3.

The Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra is comprised of 90 young professional musicians selected in 10 auditions held across the country. In a concert conducted by Resident Conductor and Director of Orchestral Activities John Kennedy, the orchestra will perform Tan Dun’s Concerto for Orchestra, Barber’s Knoxville, Summer of 1915, and Sibelius’s Symphony no. 5 in the College of Charleston Sottile Theatre. The orchestra will also perform film scores live on the Sottile stage at two film screenings. The first is Charlie Chaplin’s 1931 masterpiece City Lights featuring a score composed by Chaplin himself, conducted by Music Director of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra William Eddins. City Lights is a romantic comedy featuring Chaplin’s beloved “The Little Tramp” character and widely considered by film historians to be his best work. The second film will be Decasia, Bill Morrison’s critically acclaimed 2002 meditation on the age and decay of silent films. The only 21st-century film to be declared part of the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry, the film’s soundtrack is by American composer Michael Gordon. Before the screening, conductor John Kennedy will lead the orchestra in the US premiere of Giacinto Scelsi’s recently discovered 1956 work, Kamakala.

Kennedy’s Music in Time series features five concerts that explore contemporary music. The first concert called The Lost Garden will showcase music by Huang Ruo, the composer of the opera Paradise Interrupted, performed by members of the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra. In The Book of Sounds, pianist Conor Hanick returns to the Festival to perform German sound artist and composer Hans Otte’s piano suite Das Buch der Klänge (The Book of Sounds) that features elements of minimalism and Asian influences. Hanick will also perform The Concord Sonata concert, featuring Charles Ives’s Piano Sonata no. 2, Concord, Mass. 1840‒60, a musical depiction of the transcendentalist movement. Hanick will introduce the work with an overview of Ives’s “Essay Before a Sonata.” These concerts will be performed in the Simons Center Recital Hall at College of Charleston at 5:00pm. Music in Time concerts featuring San Francisco-based electric guitar and percussion duo, The Living Earth Show, will be part of the new American Express Woolfe Street Series held in the Festival’s newest venue, the Woolfe Street Playhouse, at the later time of 9:00pm. Quarter-Tone Shredding features electric guitarist Travis Andrews and percussionist Andy Meyerson performing Damon Waitkus’s North Pacific Garbage Patch, Brian Fernyhough’s Renvoi/Shards, Sahba Aminikia’s Sooge Sohrab, and Luciano Chessa’s Captain’s Testament. Double Happiness aims to push technical and artistic boundaries with performances of recent new works by young composers, including Christopher Cerrone’s Double Happiness, Anna Meredith’s Tassle, Adrian Knight’s Family Man, Timo Andres’s You broke it, you bought it, and new works by Nicole Lizée and Samuel Carl Adams. Woolfe Street Playhouse events feature cabaret-style table seating and bar service.

Outside the classical genre, the Festival offers a Memorial Day evening concert by American country music legends Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell in the TD Arena at College of Charleston. Musical colleagues and friends since the 1970s, the duo’s 2013 recorded collaboration Old Yellow Moon won the 2014 Grammy Award for Americana Album of the Year.

BANK OF AMERICA CHAMBER MUSIC

Under the direction of violinist Geoff Nuttall, The Charles E. and Andrea L. Volpe Director for Chamber Music, the Bank of America Chamber Music series features 33 concerts of 11 programs performed twice daily in the historic Dock Street Theatre. The 2015 chamber program will see the return of familiar faces including the St. Lawrence String Quartet—currently celebrating its 25th year as an ensemble and 20th year in residence at the Festival—cellist Alisa Weilerstein, baritone Tyler Duncan, flutist Tara Helen O’Connor, and pianists Pedja Muzijevic and Inon Barnatan. Artists new to the chamber music stage include violinist Benjamin Beilman and series composer-in-residence Mark Applebaum, who will compose a new work to premiere at the Festival. Full program details will be announced in March.

AMERICAN EXPRESS WOOLFE STREET SERIES

In addition to The Living Earth Show’s Music in Time performances, the American Express Woolfe Street Series brings three celebrated and dynamic artists to the Woolfe Street Playhouse stage. Last at the Festival in 2011, flamboyant provocateur Taylor Mac returns to perform a concert of popular songs selected from time periods as diverse as the 1770s through the 2000s. The Festival concerts provide a snapshot of a broader artistic undertaking Mac is developing that will culminate in a 24-hour marathon concert featuring songs from 24 decades of popular music. Known for his glittering stage costumes and blistering wit, Mac will be joined on stage by a three-piece band. Dancer Lil Buck will make his Spoleto Festival USA debut with the world premiere of a new work called What Moves You, a creative collaboration with cellist Ashley Bathgate. Named The Wall Street Journal Magazine’s Performing Arts Innovator of the Year, Lil Buck (aka Charles Riley) brought international attention to “jookin’”—a street dance originating in Memphis—when a video of his improvised performance with Yo-Yo Ma went viral in 2011. In What Moves You, Lil Buck and Bathgate—a member of contemporary ensemble Bang on a Can All-Stars—aim to challenge the boundaries of what the body and cello can do. Works by Bach and contemporary composer Yoav Shemesh are featured in these performances that will also be part-demonstration. All performances in the Woolfe Street Playhouse will feature intimate cabaret-style table seating. Bar service will be available before performances.

WELLS FARGO JAZZ

The 2015 program for the Wells Fargo Jazz series features popular returning artists along with Festival newcomers. Four-time Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist and Festival favorite Dianne Reeves returns to perform an outdoor concert in the College of Charleston Cistern Yard. Reeves’s latest album Beautiful Life melds elements of R&B, Latin, and pop music within the framework of 21st-century jazz and is nominated for a 2015 Grammy Award. Brazilian singer Mônica Salmaso made her acclaimed Spoleto Festival USA debut in 2003 and returns for two concerts in the College of Charleston Cistern Yard. She will be joined by two of Brazil’s most esteemed musicians, pianist Nelson Ayers and Teco Cardoso on saxophone and flute. American singer-songwriter Madeleine Peyroux will make her Festival debut with two concerts in the Cistern Yard with her distinctive renditions of classics and modern songs alongside her own signature songs. Two Italian duos will make their Festival debuts: Musica Nuda will jumpstart the 2015 festivities with a special Festival-Eve performance in the College of Charleston Cistern Yard on May 21. Vocalist Petra Magoni and double bassist Ferruccio Spinetti strip music back to the bare necessities fusing bits of jazz, rock, punk, and classical music into their performances; they will also perform on opening night. Rita Marcotulli and Luciano Biondini —a pianist and accordionist respectively—are classically trained musicians renowned on the European jazz scene for performances that evoke the traditional sounds of their homeland while also exploring their love of jazz. They will perform six concerts in the Simons Center Recital Hall at College of Charleston. American vocalist Kate Davis will make her Festival debut with a concert in the College of Charleston Cistern Yard showcasing the fresh spin she brings to standards and her own creations. Argentine pianist Carlos Aguirre, whose compositions fuse South American folklore, jazz, and chamber music, will make his North American debut with performances in the Simons Center Recital Hall. A day-long Wells Fargo Festival Finale concludes the season at Middleton Place, which will include gourmet picnic fare, a beer garden, regional bands playing throughout the afternoon, and Alabama soul seven-piece St. Paul & The Broken Bones headlining at 8:30pm followed by a fireworks display.

BEHIND THE GARDEN GATE

After its sold-out success in the past two seasons, the Festival will again collaborate with the Charleston Horticultural Society and The Garden Conservancy to present Behind the Garden Gate—self-guided tours through 16 of Charleston’s beautiful private gardens, many of which have never been open to the public.

CONVERSATIONS WITH

The Festival continues its Conversations With discussion series—interviews with Festival artists conducted by Emmy Award-winning CBS News correspondent Martha Teichner. This season, the series will feature: Director and Visual Designer Jennifer Wen Ma and Composer Huang Ruo from the opera Paradise Interrupted; Choreographer, Artist, and Director Shen Wei; Artists from Shakespeare’s Globe production of Romeo and Juliet; and Director Stefano Vizioli and Conductor Aaron Carpenè from the opera Veremonda, l’amazzone di Aragona.
