“The Secular and Sacred on the Lower Suwannee” with Mark Donop
Eroded and exposed shell mound,

Current research has revealed important new information about the prehistoric cultures that built the Shell Mound and Palmetto Mound archaeological sites along the Florida Gulf Coast in Levy County. These two sites appear to have been the cultural focal point for indigenous people in the area from about AD 200-700. Join anthropologist Mark Donop in an examination of the Montague Tallant Collection, housed here at the South Florida Museum, to see how critical the collection is to understanding the Palmetto Mound and its spectacular ceramic artifacts.

Prices: $3 Museum Members / $5 Non-members

Seating is limited; Paid reservations are required.

Snooty’s 67th Birthday Bash and Wildlife Festival is Nearly Here!
Come say “Happy Birthday” to Guinness World Records’ Oldest Manatee!

Snooty is an extra special Florida manatee who sets records every day for how long we know manatees can live. That fact has now been documented by Guinness World Records. He has been named Guinness World Records’ ” Oldest Manatee in Captivity.” Snooty lives at the South Florida Museum in Bradenton, FL in the Parker Manatee Aquarium which he shares with young orphaned or injured wild manatees that are being cared for by Museum staff as part of the Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation partnership.

As the “Oldest Manatee in Captivity,” it is widely believed that Snooty is the oldest Florida manatee in the world! He will turn an astounding 67 years old on July 21, 2015 and his birthday will be celebrated during Snooty’s 67th Birthday Bash and Wildlife Festival on July 18, 2015 from 10 am – 2 pmDon’t forget to mark your calendars!

Admission to the outdoor Birthday Bash in the Spanish Plaza and on 10th Street will be FREE, while General Admission to the Museum’s indoor Galleries, Aquarium, and Planetarium is discounted by more than half for the day! All attendees to the Festival will have the opportunity to say hello to Snooty in the Spanish Plaza’s underwater view of the manatee pool – and sing him “Happy Birthday” at noon.

Every year, Snooty receives birthday cards from kids all around the country! While the official card contest is now closed, the Museum still welcomes cards and birthday wishes from kids (and adults!) far and wide. The Museum’s Director of Living Collections Marilyn Margold, who cares for Snooty and the rehab manatees and marine life at the Museum, said, “Every year Snooty sets an even higher benchmark for how long manatees can live! Every day he’s with us, we learn more about manatees and he shows us that manatee lifespans could be extended. We want to invite kids from around the country – and all over the world – to celebrate Snooty’s life by wishing him a happy birthday.”

You can also help to make Snooty’s Birthday extra special by sending him greetings online! The Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is helping to make Snooty’s birthday great by urging their social media followers to share their love online. Help celebrate the impact Snooty has made worldwide by sending him birthday wishes from every corner of the world! You can join in wishing Snooty a happy 67th birthday by printing the official Snooty birthday card and taking a photo with it. Then post to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram along with the city where you’re from! Click here to print the card and check out recently submitted photos: Bradenton Area CVB.

NEW BLOG! Maya Stories: Dr. Gabrielle Vail shares her expertise on topics in Mayan culture

Our summer exhibition Mystery of the Mayan Medallion allows visitors to get a taste of what it’s like to be an archaeologist, biologist or archaeoastronomer while exploring the world of the ancient Maya. We’ve also enlisted Mayan scholars to give our visitors the opportunity to take their interest in the Mayan culture a step further with special programs, as well as in this blog. Dr. Gabrielle Vail will share additional information about Mayan glyphs, astronomy and culture with our readers.
Our first installment focuses on “Prehistoric Maya Astronomy” –
Hieroglyphic texts from the Maya region, as well as depictions in painted murals, screenfold books, and architectural elements from throughout this area, all emphasize the overwhelming importance of the sky and the objects that inhabited the celestial sphere (viewed as deities) to prehispanic Maya populations.

And don’t miss out on the newest exhibition at the South Florida Museum, The Mystery of the Mayan Medallion. The exhibition is now open in the East Gallery through September 13, 2015. All Museum exhibitions are included in daily general admissions. Click here for more information or call us at 941-746-4131, ext. 0.
