SHAW’S MRS WARREN’S PROFESSION CONTINUES TO CONFRONT PREVAILING VIEWS ABOUT THE #OLDESTPROFESSION
–  Previews start April 21 at the Royal George Theatre –

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (April 20, 2016) — Bernard Shaw’s notoriously provocative Mrs Warren’s Profession – a play once considered “unfit for women’s ears” – begins previews tomorrow in the Shaw Festival’s intimate Royal George Theatre. Dora Award-winning director Eda Holmes’ contemporary spin on this relevant classic play confronts society’s concepts of being a woman, a mother and a purveyor of the world’s #oldestprofession.

Holmes’ production, set in a modern-day British gentlemen’s club, frames the conversation concerning women’s work and women’s worth within the world of male privilege. Designer Patrick Clark and lighting designer Kimberly Purtell have created a sumptuous marriage between historical architecture and modern day details reflecting the timelessness of the play’s arguments.

Vivie Warren (Jennifer Dzialoszynski) has enjoyed a privileged life, including a fine university education, unaware that her entire existence has been supported by her mother, Kitty Warren’s (Nicole Underhay) unmentionable profession. When Vivie discovers the truth, it leads to an emotional showdown between two intelligent and passionate women.

This Shaw Festival production also features Wade Bogert-O’Brien, Thom Marriott, Gray Powell and Shawn Wright.

Mrs Warren’s Profession is on stage at the Royal George Theatre (85 Queen Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake) from April 21 to October 23 (opening May 14).

Mrs Warren’s Profession is generously sponsored by James F. Brown.
