“The A. B. Edwards Theatre was unveiled in 1926,” says Sherry Janes, president of Sarasota Singles Society. “The Sarasota Herald Tribune hailed the theater for ‘having admitted Sarasota into a fairyland of costly decoration, rich furnishings and never to be forgotten artistry.’” Over the years, the theater became a popular venue for a variety of entertainment and the top headliners of the time graced its stage. In 1952, it became host to the blockbuster movie, The Greatest Show on Earth. In 2007, a major renovation was undertaken to update the facility and restore its historically appropriate decor. At the completion in 2008 of the $20 million project, Musical America called the Sarasota Opera House “one of the finest venues for opera in the United States.”

“An extraordinary opportunity has been offered our group to privately tour this exquisite facility,” says Janes. “We welcome Suncoast singles to join us on this special experience.”

Special experiences are what the Sarasota Singles Society is all about. Janes, who founded the organization in 2013, says it offers, “social opportunities for area singles to meet and mingle.” Club members and guests enjoy cultural and recreational events, dinner dances, beach parties, wine tastings and gatherings at private clubs.

Travel also plays a major role. Plans are already in place for the Sarasota Singles Society’s inaugural river cruise, “The Enchanting Rhine,” which will depart from Basel, Switzerland, on April 20, 2015, with an option to stay two nights in Zurich and two in Lucerne at five-star hotels. “We’ll be traveling through Switzerland, Germany, France and Holland, and arriving in Amsterdam at the peak of the tulip bloom season, passing fields with millions of colorful blooms,” says Janes. “Staterooms are limited so we’re letting everyone know this is the opportunity to not miss the boat!”

Janes, a retired interior designer who moved to Sarasota from Highlands, North Carolina, in 2012, says she launched the group after experiencing challenges meeting new friends and potential dates. Her inspiration? A successful singles society her friends had created in Chicago. “I used their group as a model—and I’m happy to say the concept works perfectly here,” she says. Janes adds that the Sarasota social group goes beyond helping area singles meet; it also offers opportunities to develop life-long friendships while enjoying upscale social events, culture and travel.

“It’s a wonderful way to make new friends, enjoy an active social life, find compatible travel companions, or network for your business,” she says. “We provide opportunities for single people of all ages to meet and socialize in comfortable settings that allow people to develop relationships in a natural way.”

She says that in less than a year, many people have already made meaningful connections.

“These connections don’t always lead to romance but they do lead to friendships,” says Janes. “This is especially true for people who just relocated to the area, or those who recently lost their life partner. It’s just a natural way to make new friends, enjoy an active and fulfilling social life, and, yes, perhaps meet a new romantic interest.”
