Sarasota Contemporary Dance Volunteer Dan Barzel Joins Board of Directors
SCD welcomes Dan Barzel, businessman and advocate for area nonprofits, to its Board of Directors. He has supported or served the boards of many nonprofits, including theaters, schools, and religious congregations and has been a volunteer with SCD for the last three years.
Barzel’s keen interest in Sarasota Contemporary Dance stems from a lifelong interest in both classical and modern dance. He was very involved in the performing arts in Memphis for over 10 years and was energized to continue that involvement in Sarasota once he and his wife, Lisa, moved here 3 years ago.
“Dan has been a pivotal volunteer with SCD, singlehandedly managing the buildout of our Rosemary District Studio. An accomplished business executive with extensive non-profit experience, we’re delighted to welcome him to the SCD Board,” said SCD Board President Shane Chalke.
Barzel has an extensive business and consulting background. He is a retired VP of Merchandising from AutoZone, where he led several teams producing $2-3 billion in annual sales from 2002 to 2013. Barzel was educated at Ryerson University in Toronto and University of Florida where he received his bachelor’s degree in building construction and an MBA. He began his career working project management and owner’s rep positions at University of Richmond and Best Products. Barzel later transitioned to retail operations and merchandising, ran his own retail business, and worked in merchandising at Circuit City for 14 years before moving to AutoZone.
Prior to managing the buildout of SCD’s new space, Barzel worked as an owner’s rep for Playhouse on the Square’s new $12 million facility and Hattiloo Theatre’s $3.5 million theater and black box. He has also participated in building schools, nursing home, and religious facilities.
“SCD produced one of the first arts performances we went to in Sarasota, and we loved every minute of that event. We’ve been ardent supporters ever since.” – Dan Barzel
