There is nothing so sweet as an all volunteer cast and staff’ performance that rivals Broadway in its dazzle and passion.
March 24th at the Manatee Performing Arts Center, the actors and musicians delighted and entranced a near capacity crowd with a first class performance of Boynton Beach Club.
Written by Susan Seidelman in 2006, this debut performance was artfully directed by Rick Kerby, produced with the talents of Nancy and Hal West, with music from renowned Ned Paul Ginsburg.
Boynton Beach Club is based on the experience of the original director’s mother and a widowed friend in a coastal Florida retirement conclave. A bereavement group brings the characters together in this leisure community.
The script is superb and well played. Nancy Denton (Lois) and Brian Kleinschmidt (Donald) steal the show as Lois, a confident single retiree, and Donald, a smitten “younger man” who pursues her. Their grace and electricity in “Dancing in the Sand” number is enthralling and utterly romantic.
Another budding romance appears as Ellen Kleinschmidt (Sandy) coaxes a reluctant Rodd Dyer (Jack) back into society with her coquettish ways in strong performances by both actors.
Newly widowed Meg Newsome (Marilyn) tugs at our heart- strings as she progresses through her anger and grief. Although it was not the leading role, her performance was memorable.
I will leave the intrigue of Al Jackson’s (Harry) dirty little secret and Ellen Kleinschmidt’s (Sandy) past to unfold.
I applaud the sound and lighting crews who transitioned our attention smoothly from one scene to another on a very basic stage setting. Simple props and vibrant costumes set us solidly in the 80s. Several dance numbers added a lively and joyful element to the production.
Boynton Beach Club is so much more than an entertaining journey down memory lane. We are faced with our own subtle prejudices and snobbery as the truth about Donald is revealed. Throughout the production, we feel Marilyn’s self doubts, fears and anger as the bereavement group supports her through to acceptance and independence. The cast members react as their character would in that time period.
The final gift of Boynton Beach Club is not only the memories shared, but more importantly, the self reflection it brings. Be sure to catch this upbeat outlook on life after 50 before it closes April 2nd.

(BRADENTON, March 3rd, 2017) The world premiere of the heartwarming musical romantic comedy, Boynton Beach Club, will take place on Thursday, March 16 and run through April 2nd at the Manatee Performing Arts Center.
Boynton Beach Club explores our amazing capacity to rebound and fall in love again at any age. It’s the story of aging South Florida Baby Boomers whose lives intersect at a local Bereavement Club, where some have gone to find emotional support and companionship after the loss of a loved one. Soon they find themselves back in the “dating game” after decades of married life, only to discover that all the rules have changed.
Boynton Beach Club offers an honest and optimistic look toward aging– a hot topic today, as Baby Boomers enter their retirement years. Rather than a nostalgic look back at the past, this is a view to the future, with a score full of new, original songs.
Book for Boynton Beach Club is by Susan Seidelman, an award-winning film director whose credits include “Desperately Seeking Susan” starring Madonna, “She-Devil” starring Meryl Streep and HBO’s “Sex and the City”. Seidelman also co-wrote and directed the film version of “Boynton Beach Club”. Ned Paul Ginsburg, a noted composer/orchestrator, has composed the score; his Broadway credits include “Aladdin” and “Beauty and the Beast.” The premiere is being directed by Manatee Players’ own Producing Artistic Director, Rick Kerby.
