Review of Manatee Performing Arts Center’s Season Opening Production of 42nd Street: “Great, Great and Great”

42nd Street – Great, Great and Great

New York’s Broadway is 400 miles long, running from upstate New York all the way down to lower Manhattan. But last night, when the show “42nd Street” opened at the Manatee Performing Arts Center, you knew that that famous home of All-Star musicals came all the way down to Bradenton. The show is the old classic – girl tries out for show; girl gets part; star breaks leg, breaks ankle, gets laryngitis, or what ever; girl becomes new star. BUT, it is done so well, and on such a professional level, that you KNOW you are in a Broadway theater. And not the Broadway theater of today which seats 2,000 people at $120 per seat but a 1940s size Broadway theater that seats a few hundred. And the ticket prices date back to those earlier days as well.

While this is community theater you could not tell that by the level of acting, choreography, dancing, singing, lighting or costumes. A wonderful, comfortable theater, a fun, enjoyable show, in a great setting along the edge of the Manatee River. Go for a walk along the river, have lunch or dinner and than take in a manatee or evening performance. This show runs through August 28th so buy a couple of tickets and then find somebody to go with you. Tickets are available at (941) 748-5875 or online at http://www.manateeperformingartscenter.com/
