Where do you find a Cabaret treasure in heart of the “Big Apple”?

You find it “Behind the Mind” at the Duplex Cabaret Theatre (Cnr. Christopher and 7th Ave, New York, NY) in Greenwich Village, known as the “cradle of New York City cabaret”!

Walking into “The Duplex” … is like taking a step back in time to the year 1950 when this legendary Theatre first opened its’ doors … and since then … many cabaret icons such as Woody Allen, Joan Rivers and Barbra Streisand have graced its stage. This character-filled platform was the perfect setting to showcase the emerging talent of JORDAN RUTTER in the performance of “BEHIND THE MIND” – the Complete Cabaret songs of William Bolcom and Arnold Weinstein. Operamission presented and produced this performance.

This “one night only” spectacular performance showcased the range of vocal talent within one man! Together with his talented pianist, Jennifer Peterson, they graced the stage in a performance of heartfelt vocal repertoire of musical talent. Jordan Rutter is the perfect combination of incredible voice control and volume, compassionate facial expressions of the lyrics and a stage personality the audience fall in love with.

The music of William Bolcom was brilliantly re-worked to bring a light contemporary story-telling theme to life in musical flair and perfect deliverance! Although Jordan Rutter is a young in age, his advanced ear-tone for music, flair for performing and no shortage of talent will ensure a prommissing career for this New York-based countertenor – the world is truly his oyster!

Jordan Rutter has an impressive young career of talented performances behind his name including opera, concert repertoire and contemporary work. Mr. Rutter holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music and University of North Florida.

He made his debut with New York City’s operamission as co-curator and performer in 53rd Street Handel: a monthly series of original pastiches comprised of scenes from twenty-one of Handel’s operas. In November 2016 Mr. Rutter made his off-Broadway debut with Origin Theatre Company, curating and performing musical intermezzi for the American premiere of Lot Vekemans “POISON”. His list of musical involvement and performances include;
“Three-way” – A Robert Peterson’s world premiere (Nashville Opera), the New York premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and in concert with the American Modern Ensemble, performing excerpts from Three Way, for the occasion of his Merkin Hall debut in April 2017.

His love and dedication of new music, is evident in his work with the American Opera Projects where he developed the roles of Lola (Legendary, Joseph Rubinstein), Kyle (Three Way, Robert Paterson), and the title role of Ashima (Jing Jing Luo).

During his 2015 season, Mr. Rutter participated in the MET LiveArts installation of Mingwei Lee’s Sonic Blossom, and performed the world premiere of Edgar David Grana’s Lay By for countertenor, violin, cello, and clarinet. Mr. Rutter’s discography includes recordings of Lay By and Rebecca Erin Smith’s draw | pull | drag.

Additional highlights of his operatic activity include Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Opera on the Avalon, the Sorceress in Dido & Aeneas with the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, and the role of Le fils de Macduff in the American French-language premiere of Ernest Bloch’s Macbeth, a performance which earned Mr. Rutter praise from both Opera News and Gay City News.

Mr. Rutter’s oratorio credits include Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. He has also performed the cantata for alto solo Bach’s Geist und Seele wird verwirret BWV 35 and Haydn’s Arianna a Naxos. In February 2017 Mr. Rutter joined the Academy of Sacred Drama for a reading of Scarlatti’s La Giuditta, in which he made his role debut as Oloferne.

Jennifer Peterson is the director of operamission, bringing opera to hotel lobbies, bars, and libraries. operamission is dedicated to developing new opera, performing cabaret music, and building new audiences and presentation styles, as well as its long-term project of performing G.F. Handel’s 39 operas in order.
