One year away from its highly anticipated centennial season, Seagle Music Colony presents a compelling 99th season featuring young artists from around the country beginning June 21, 2014. The summer season kicks off with Old Friends & New, a fast-paced concert introducing the 2014 young artists in performances ranging from Broadway to opera, hosted by Artistic Director Darren K. Woods at 8:00 pm at the Oscar Seagle Memorial Theatre.

The Mainstage Season offers four productions. It opens just a little over a week later, July 2, 2014, with Lerner & Loewe’s popular Broadway classic, Camelot, based on the legend of King Arthur. Timeless tunes, including “The Simple Joys of Maidenhood”, “C’est Moi” and “If Ever I Would Leave You” will have audience members humming as they leave the theatre.

Tony Kostecki, General Director of Seagle Music Colony, stated, “The faculty, staff and board are excited to embark on our 99th anniversary season with much energy as we move toward our centennial.  This summer, we have 32 of the very best young singers in the country that are eager to build their skills, a full complement of excellent faculty and a range of guest artists and teachers that will help us fulfill our mission of excellence in training and the highest in performance standards.  I’m confident our audiences will thrill not only at the productions, but while watching our 2014 crop of young artists blossom before their eyes.”

Since 1915, in the relaxed, beautiful surroundings of New York State’s Adirondack Mountain Region, the Seagle Music Colony, founded by world-renowned opera singer, baritone Oscar Seagle, has provided world class training in opera and musical theatre and performance experience to some of the best young singers from around the country. Offering a specialized curriculum, Seagle allows young artists to study with a distinguished staff of highly regarded experts in the field, including Richard Kagey, Stephen Lusmann, Tyson Deaton, and Richard Williams, along with internationally renowned resident guest artists.

The Seagle Music Colony Singers were one of the first groups to perform before television cameras. The Colony Opera Guild was formed in 1941 and performed for several years at the Wikiosko Barn Theatre on Lake George, which was the Bolton Road home of Mrs. Charles Peabody. After Oscar Seagle’s death in 1945, his son John directed and taught voice at the Seagle Music Colony from 1945 to 1985. The old barn that was Oscar Seagle’s studio in Schroon Lake was extended into a theatre in his memory. John died in 1997. Under the Seagle family stewardship, which continues to the present, of John’s son Peter, his wife, Dodie, and their three sons, the Colony continued in many of the same traditions. Then, in 1996, Darren K. Woods was hired as General Director. Under his leadership, and with a core staff consisting of distinguished experts in the field, the Colony has continued to grow.

Today over 500 applicants vie for the opportunity to attend the Colony each summer. In the past ten years, the Colony has grown from two productions and eight performances per summer to six full productions and over thirty-five performances. Since 2008, Tony Kostecki serves as full-time resident General Director and Darren Woods has transitioned to part-time summer Artistic Director. www.seaglecolony.org/
