RANGERS RECEIVE OF MIKE CARP ON WAIVER CLAIM FROM BOSTON RED SOX; TRANSFER RHP ALEXI OGANDO TO 60-DAY DISABLED LIST

Carp scheduled to join Rangers tomorrow in Chicago

Cleveland, Ohio – The Texas Rangers announced after today’s game that outfielder Mike Carp has been assigned to the club on a waiver claim from the Boston Red Sox.  To make room on the 40-man roster for Carp (#28), the club has transferred right-handed pitcher Alexi Ogando from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list.  The Rangers will make another move to accommodate Carp on the active roster when he reports to the club.

Carp, 28, batted .198 (17-86) with no homers and 9 RBI in 42 games with Boston this season.  The left-handed batter was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Friday.  He was on the disabled list June 1-July 6 with a fractured right foot, appearing in 7 games on an injury rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket.  Carp appeared in 6 games and was on all 3 rosters during the Red Sox’ 2013 World Series championship run.  This season, he made his pitching debut in the 9th inning on April 24 vs. New York-AL, allowing one run in 1.0 inning with 5 walks.

Carp is a career .260 hitter with 27 home runs and 123 RBI over 301 major league games with Seattle (2009-12) and Boston (2013-14), playing primarily first base and left field.  He set career highs in slugging (.523) and OPS (.885) for the Red Sox in 2013.

Ogando had been on the disabled list since June 4 with right elbow inflammation.  He has gone 2-3 with a 6.84 ERA (19 ER/25.0 IP) in 27 relief outings for the Rangers this season.

With today’s transactions, the Rangers still have a full 40-man roster.
