RANGERS PURCHASE CONTRACT OF RHP PHIL KLEIN FROM TRIPLE-A ROUND ROCK;

LHP RYAN FEIERABEND DESIGNATED FOR ASSIGNMENT

C Geovany Soto to begin injury rehabilitation assignment with Round Rock tonight

Cleveland, Ohio – The Texas Rangers announced this afternoon that the club has purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Phil Klein (#64) from Triple-A Round Rock.  To make room for Klein on both the active and 40-man rosters, the club has designated left-handed pitcher Ryan Feierabend for assignment.

Klein, 25, has combined to go 3-0 with a 0.52 ERA (3 ER/51.2 IP) and 10 saves over 33 relief appearances with Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock.  The 6-foot-7, 260-pound right-hander has not allowed a run over his last 35.0 innings of work at the minor league level, a span of 22 relief appearances dating back to May 13 with Frisco. He was promoted to Round Rock on June 25 and appeared in 9 games with the Express, tossing 18.1 scoreless innings with 28 strikeouts.

For the season, Klein has totaled 70 strikeouts against 20 walks, averaging 13.7 strikeouts per 9 innings.  He has combined to hold opponents to a .132 average (22-167) and no extra-base hits between Frisco and Round Rock. The Columbus, Ohio native and Youngstown State University product was selected by Texas in the 30th round of the 2011 June draft and signed by area scout Roger Coryell.

The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Feierabend (pronounced FEAR-ah-bend) to the minor leagues.  He has compiled no record and a 6.14 ERA (5 ER/7.1 IP) over 6 relief outings with Texas since his contract was purchased from Round Rock on July 12.  He has spent the rest of the season with the Express, going 8-5 with a 4.54 ERA in 19 starts.

With today’s transactions, the Rangers still have a full 40-man roster.

SOTO TO BEGIN REHAB ASSIGNMENT TONIGHT: Catcher Geovany Soto is scheduled to begin an injury rehabilitation assignment tonight for Triple-A Round Rock against Oklahoma City.  Soto was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 22 after suffering a right groin strain the previous night while running the bases.  Soto had appeared in 3 games for the Rangers after being activated from a season-long disabled list stint on July 17 following right knee surgery.
