RANGERS ANNOUNCE SIX PLAYERS ASSIGNED OUTRIGHT TO TRIPLE-A ROUND ROCK,

INCLUDING THREE PLAYERS REINSTATED FROM 60-DAY DISABLED LIST

LHP Joseph Ortiz assigned to Chicago Cubs on waiver claim

Arlington, Texas – The Texas Rangers announced this afternoon the following transactions:

  • Left-handed pitcher Joseph Ortiz has been assigned to the Chicago Cubs on a waiver claim
  • Outfielder Engel Beltre, left-handed pitcher Pedro Figueroa, and infielder Kevin Kouzmanoff reinstated from 60-day disabled list and assigned outright to Round Rock
  • Right-handed pitcher Wilmer Font, first baseman J.P. Arencibia, and infielder Guilder Rodriguez assigned outright to Round Rock

Ortiz opened the season on the 60-day disabled list due to a fractured left foot.  He was reinstated from the disabled list and optioned to Double-A Frisco on July 25 and did not pitch for the Rangers this season.  Ortiz made his major league debut with the Rangers in 2013.

Beltre was on the 60-day disabled list the entire 2014 season due to surgeries on both legs.  Figueroa made 10 appearances for Texas this season before having Tommy John ligament replacement surgery in his left elbow on April 30.  Kouzmanoff batted .362 with 2 homers and 10 RBI in 13 games with the Rangers before having back surgery in both May and July.

Font, who did not pitch for Texas this season and had right elbow surgery to remove a bone spur in August, was designated for assignment on Thursday when the club received right-handed pitcher Alfredo Figaro from Milwaukee on a waiver claim.  Arencibia batted .177 with 10 home runs and 35 RBI over 63 games with Texas this season.  Rodriguez went 2-for-12 (.167) with an RBI and 2 runs scored over 7 games for the Rangers in September, his first major league action.

Kouzmanoff and Arencibia both have the right to become free agents.

With today’s transactions, the Rangers now have 37 players on the club’s 40-man roster.
