Public Programs Complement Exhibition about Hellenistic Art at The Met

What:
The keynote lecture of a symposium at The Metropolitan Museum of Art—Mummies from the Ice: The World of Scythian Warriors in the Altay Permafrost by Hermann Parzinger, President, Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Germany—will be presented tomorrow, May 5, at 6 pm. This talk is free. The symposium, Art of the Hellenistic Kingdoms: From Pergamon to Rome, is organized in conjunction with The Met’s recently opened landmark exhibition Pergamon and the Hellenistic Kingdoms of the Ancient World (through July 17). Additional information about the exhibition, symposium, keynote lecture, and exhibition tours, and other related programs is available on The Met website.

The exhibition Pergamon and the Hellenistic Kingdoms of the Ancient World focuses on the three centuries between the death of Alexander the Great (323 B.C.) and the suicide of Cleopatra. In this period, the first art collections and museums as well as great libraries were formed within elaborate palaces. The exhibition represents an historic collaboration between The Met and the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, whose celebrated sculptures comprise approximately one–third of some 265 artworks on display. A rich diversity of art forms arose through the patronage of the royal courts of the Hellenistic Kingdoms, with special emphasis on Pergamon, capital of the Attalid dynasty, which ruled over large parts of Asia Minor. Carefully selected masterpieces in all media highlight the innovations and technical mastery achieved by Hellenistic artists, whose enduring legacy profoundly influenced Roman art.
