LOS ANGELES, CA (May 19, 2016) – Pop songstress Kylie Hughes is teaming up with Popdust to premiere her new music video for her single “Never Ever“! Popdust raves, “her voice is lilting⎯a feathery and cutting delivery over a haunting piano and string arrangement. It’s akin to Lana Del Rey‘s cinematic work but with a Taylor Swift-heavy syrup.” Blended with Hughes’ angelic vocals are the music video’s striking visuals: a single, drifting rose in misty waters, a candelabra flickering through twisted tree branches and Hughes layered in white lace and chiffon, donning a vintage tiara, just to name a few. The single “Never Ever“, produced and co-written by Brent Bourgeois, features a more intimate, soulful sound than the California-bred Hughes’ debut EP “Calipopicana”. The six-song album was named for the singer-songwriter’s blend of classic pop, Americana soul and beachy melodies. The colorful term “Calipopicana” emerged in 2012, after Hughes lightheartedly described her original, infectious sound, merging a California surf vibe, with influences like The Beach Boys and The Bangles, mixed with pop and soul. The title track of the album is, naturally, sweeping, high-energy retro-pop. The director of the music video Jim Yukich is a former MTV Video Music Awards winner with a long list of collaborations with pop heavyweights, including David Bowie and Michael Jackson.

The release of the EP “Calipopicana” on October 8, 2014 extended a warm invitation to join Hughes for a fun-filled, sun-swept musical day at the beach. Her passion for spontaneous adventure and obvious musical talent quickly earned the Malibu songstress attention from fans and critics. The album landed her features in Examiner, Good Day LA, K-CAL TV 9, Instyle.com, Music Connection‘s Hot 100 Unsigned Artists, just to name a few.
The six tracks on “Calipopicana” were recorded at Earle Mankey‘s California studio, Earle’s Psychedelic Shack. Mankey, a onetime member of the renowned L.A. band Sparks, boasts an impressive list of production credits, including bands like The Pop, The Runaways and Concrete Blonde. His superstar engineering credits include Elton John, David Gray and The Beach Boys. Co-writers on “Calipopicana” include John Ferriter, John “Fin” Finseth of the famed California rock band The Tearaways and Brent Bourgeois, co-founder of the veteran rock band Bourgeois-Tagg.
The result of these collaborations is catchy, surf-inspired retro-pop with a lyrical darkness just below the surface. “Short Skirts” and “Dream Dream Dream” continue the upbeat vibe of “Calipopicana“, while “Maliblues” and “Wish You Were Dead“, which contrasts a fun, snappy melodies with dark lyrics, express an edgier tone to the EP. Though Hughes grew up enjoying and inspired by the laid back California lifestyle of surfing, diving, snorkeling and spending breezy afternoons on the sand, she also experienced the kind of longing and heartbreak that many young women do. This turmoil manifested itself as dark shadings to offset the beachy bubblegum tones in Hughes’ music.
The Pepperdine graduate and California artist has many other musical accomplishments under her belt, having gigged both with her band and performed solo acoustic sets in numerous Hollywood hotspots (Viper Room, Hotel Café, House of Blues), and local clubs in and around Malibu (Malibu Inn, Sunset Lounge, Canyon Club). Additionally, the pop songstress sang the National Anthem before a concert by John Mayer at the California Mid-State Fair; shared the stage with The Beach Boys in Thousand Oaks, CA and with Jewel in Napa, CA; played at the Cantinas Music Festival in Paso Robles, CA on a bill with Newsboys and MercyMe; and performed a duet in 2013 at Carnegie Hall with Michael W. Smith. The Malibu singer-songwriter has also shared the stage with Building 429 and Jesse McCartney, among others. Impressively, two of Hughes’ songs were featured in the 2013 film “Zero to 100: The Lakey Peterson Story“, and she performed her song “Paradise” at the film’s premiere in Santa Barbara, CA.
