PLAYERS THEATRE ART GALLERY HOSTS RECEPTION FOR THREE GIFTED ARTISTS FOLLOWED BY SPECIAL PREVIEW OF “URINETOWN”

Sarasota, FL, April 7, 2014 – The Players Theatre will host a reception and showing for three local artists on Wednesday, April 16 at 6:45 PM – Laine Nixon, Jerome Chesley and Tony Corbitt, Jr. The gallery will be filled with original pieces including Nixon’s bold, colorful abstractions, Chesley’s intricately saturated, award-winning watercolors and Corbitt’s expressive, classically influenced oil paintings. After enjoying the art showing, guests can attend a special preview of The Players Theatre production of “Urinetown” for a discounted ticket price. About the Artists

Laine Nixon

Laine Nixon moved to Sarasota in 2010 where she pursues art making, philosophy and creative expression through abstract painting. Nixon explains, “My overriding concern in art-making is to express the tiny moment suspended between idea and reality; between thought and  thing.”

Nixon is a Creativity Facilitator for the Ringling College Creativity Center. She executed two solo shows in Tampa while pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree and was granted the USF College of Engineering Artbank Award. She also holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

In her show at The Players Art Gallery, These are not Illusions, she juxtaposes disparate types of mediums (watercolor, acrylic, polyacrylate, canvas, oil, enamel) and uses the formal qualities of painting to heighten the tension between subject and ground, provoking the viewer to gently oscillate between one set of facts and another.

Jerome Chesley

Jerome Chesley has a Masters of Art and also attended the University of Art in Siena, Italy. He has over 30 years of experience in art instruction in public schools and colleges.  A member of local art organizations and art centers, he teaches workshops and demonstrates throughout Florida and the renowned Chautauqua Institution in New York State throughout the summer. His works are in many collections and has won awards for his paintings including, most recently, third place at Art Center Manatee and first place in the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society’s exhibition at the Longboat Key Center for the Arts.

Tony Corbitt

Tony Corbitt, Jr. is a self-taught artist living and working in Sarasota, FL. He is greatly influenced by the French Masters of the late 19th Century, which shows in his preference to paint original work directly from observation.

Selph Road Studios: The Art of Tony Corbitt Jr. represents his original oil paintings and sketch work, as well as his popular black and white “Speed Painting” performance art series.

About “Urinetown”

The Players Theatre will present the triple Tony Award-winning musical “Urinetown” on their main stage opening April 17th. This “irreverent and uproariously funny” satirical theatrical experience is the final show of of their 84th Broadway Season and will run for 2 weeks with the possibility of an extension into the first week of May. The show is Directed & Choreographed by Kyle Ennis Turoff with musical direction by Rick Bogner.

In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage caused by a 20-year draught has led to a government ban on private toilets with no concern for the poor, bladder-oppressed masses. The monopolistic corporation, UGC (Urine Good Company) charges the city’s citizens sky-high prices to use public amenities. But young Bobby Strong, a lowly restroom attendant, decides that now is the time for change. The show parodies musicals such as The Cradle Will Rock, Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story and Les Misérables – and the Broadway musical itself as a form. “Urinetown” spares nothing with its irreverent humor and sharp wit.
