New Music New College Presents NEWCLOrk

Think of it as a chamber orchestra for the 21st-century, where instead of violins and oboes, the musicians perform on… laptop computers.

That’s perhaps the easiest way to describe NEWCLOrk, the New College Laptop Orchestra, the penultimate concert in this year’s New Music New College series. The free, one-hour concert is at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at the Sainer Pavilion.

As the culmination of their Electronic Music class, under Visiting Assistant Prof. Mark Dancigers, 20 students will perform three group pieces.

The first and third both involve half of the class as a laptop orchestra, though there will be several acoustic instruments and even some vocalists involved. The music and sounds will be produced using software called Logic Pro X, an application capable of sophisticated musical realization.

The middle piece of the program involves the entire class, with some on laptops, one on percussion, and several speaking, as music is generated in response to a series of texts sent back and forth – and projected on a screen for all to follow. This piece utilizes a programming language called SuperCollider for real-time audio syntheses and algorithmic composition.
