New College’s Arts Students Illuminate the Overlooked in ‘Marginalia’

New College of Florida’s Art Department presents the 2016 Senior Thesis Art Exhibition, “Marginalia,” and invites the public to an opening reception on Friday, April 15, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the College’s Isermann Gallery.

Marginalia features the culmination of a yearlong intensive project undertaken by five New College studio art majors: Davin Aberle, Laura Costa, Meris Drew, Danielle Dygert, and Sara Sarmiento.

In a move from margin to center, this year’s featured work shares a common interest in illuminating the overlooked, while foregrounding timely topics including: the representation of LGBTQ people in popular media, the tensions and complexities of sisterhood through the lens of Homer, biculturality via the graphic novel, wonderment and melancholy in the miniature, and post-colonial identity.

The artists utilize distinctive methods ranging from the anachronistic to the uniquely contemporary, the miniature to the monumental, the temporal, and the experiential. Through diverse media including silverpoint drawing, printmaking, oil painting, graphic illustration, book arts, digital animation and interactive installation, each artist brings a sense of purpose and meaning to this seminal studio art capstone project.

The artists will be on hand during the opening reception, and food and refreshments will be provided. The reception is generously supported by Merrill Lynch Sarasota.

The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
