MUSICA SACRA CANTORUM OPENS 2015-2016 SEASON
‘MUSIC OF THE STAGE’

WHAT:
Music of the Opera and Broadway Stage
Musica Sacra opens its 2015 season – Music of the Stage – with an excursion into the theatrical world of opera and Broadway. Sacred spaces and edifices are not the exclusive domain of sacred music. In fact, the theatrical stage has played host to innumerable productions throughout history of stories or plots centered on the sacred. Other stories centered on the profane contain elements of the sacred within them. Many of these stories have served as the basis for the greatest operas and musicals of all time. So, with that in mind, Musica Sacra moves forward yet again, delving into a season full of sacred stage music. Dr. Robert Parrish, Musica Sacra’s Artistic Director, former head of the opera program at The College of New Jersey, and staff musician at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Trenton, NJ gets to fuse together his two great musical passions this season by exploring sacred music and the theatrical stage.

The Musica Sacra Cantorum Chorus – an ensemble which weaves together the best professional voices in the area with highly skilled volunteers into one stunning ensemble – will explore the realm of Music of the Opera and Broadway Stage in a cabaret style performance which will includes choral and solo works from the masters. Included are ‘Va Pensiero’ from Verdi’s Nabucco, ‘The Bell Chorus’ from Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, ‘The Bridal Chorus’ from Wagner’s Lohengrin, ‘Evening Prayer’ from Humperdinck’s Hansel und Gretel, ‘Pie Jesu’ from Lloyd Webber’s Requiem, ‘Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat’ from Loesser’s Guys and Dolls, ‘Bring Him Home’ from Schonberg and Boublil’s Les Miserables’ and ‘Make Our Garden Grow’ from Bernstein’s Candide.

To complete the ‘surround sound’ experience, the event will be presented in the round, with patrons seated at tables in the casual elegance of Gillespie Hall on the campus of the Church of the Redeemer in downtown Sarasota. Refreshments will be available to those who wish to enhance their cabaret experience.
