LA CITY HALL WILL GO DARK FOR EARTH HOUR: 8:30 PM TONIGHT

LOS ANGELES – Mayor Garcetti announced that LA City Hall’s lights will go dark for Earth Hour today, March 28 from 8:30PM to 9:30 PM. Earth Hour is the World Wildlife Foundation’s international event to raise awareness about climate change and energy usage.

“Climate change is at our doorstep, and unless we take action now, we face dire environmental and economic consequences,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said. “Individual steps lead to big collective leaps toward change, and with cities as the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions, we must work to make every hour of every day an ‘earth hour.'”

Mayor Garcetti’s Office of Sustainability rallied city departments and institutions citywide to participate in Earth Hour tonight. More than 60 buildings citywide are participating including the Department of Water and Power headquarters Downtown (John Ferraro Building), the Port of L.A., the Getty Center, Paramount Studios, UCLA, USC, and LAX, whose famous pylons will go dark for the hour.

Mayor Garcetti is encouraging individual Angelenos to participate: learn more about Earth Hour and fun ways to enjoy the hour in the dark at www.earthhour.org and join the social media movement at #earthhour and #yourpower.

More than 160 countries and 7,000 cities will be participating in Earth Hour, across twenty-four time zones and six continents. A live stream of events across the globe is available on Earth Hour’s website at www.earthhour.org.

Mayor Garcetti earlier this year announced the most aggressive energy efficiency target for any public utility in the nation. He was appointed to President Obama’s Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience and co-founded and leads the nationwide Mayors National Climate Action Agenda.
