About the author: An icon in American theatre, Stuart Vaughan was the founding artistic director of the New York Shakespeare Festival and returned as the festival’s resident director thirty years after its creation. Beginning his career as an actor in stock, Off-Broadway and Broadway plays, Vaughan directed more than 200 productions over the course of his career, including 40 in New York. The founder of the Seattle Repertory Theatre, Repertory Theatre New Orleans, and The New Globe Theatre, Vaughan also served as artistic director of New York’s Phoenix Theatre and guest director at the Goodman Theatre, the Trinity Square Repertory Theatre, the Cleveland Playhouse and the Denver Center Theatre Company. Receiving honorary doctorates for his work in theatre from Indiana State University and Rowan University, he has taught at Harvard, Ohio State and the University of Alabama, and his textbook “Directing Plays: A Working Professional’s Method” is in wide use in colleges around the country. Vaughan was a founding member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and was a member of the Actors Studio.
