The program, now in its fifth consecutive year, is a collaborative effort between the county’s public libraries and the Baltimore Orioles. Area youth who read three books in February, then turned in their “scorecard” earned a free ticket to the game. This year nearly 300 books were read.
Throwing out the first pitch at Sunday’s game will be 10-year-old Max Harmon, an avid reader who enjoys the Harry Potter and Lemony Snicket series of books. Max’s name was randomly selected among the names of area youths who participated in this year’s program.
This will be the first Baltimore Orioles Spring Training game for the fourth grader, who attends Rowlett Academy in Bradenton. His mom, Michelle Harmon, said he was really excited about throwing out the first pitch, and that Max had been practicing every night since he was selected. He’ll be accompanied to the mound by Sarabeth Kalajian, director of Sarasota County Library System.
