La Bohème, the Most-Performed Opera in Met History,

Returns September 23 With All Six Principals Singing Their First Met Performances of the Leading Roles

Puccini’s timeless opera about tragic romance among struggling artists in 19th century Paris will return to the Met on September 23 for fifteen performances featuring a variety of rising stars in the leading roles. The opening performances will star Russian soprano Ekaterina Scherbachenko as the frail seamstress Mimì and American tenor Bryan Hymel as the lovesick poet Rodolfo. Greek soprano Myrtò Papatanasiu makes her Met debut as their coquettish friend Musetta, with American baritone Quinn Kelsey as the painter Marcello. Russian baritone Alexey Lavrov and English bass David Soar round out the sextet of bohemians. All six principals are singing these roles at the Met for the first time this sesason. Italian maestro Riccardo Frizza conducts the performances, which will be seen in Franco Zeffirelli’s lavish 1981 production.

This cast plays four performances through October 4, with Korean soprano Hei-Kyung Hong singing Mimì in the final performance.

The opera returns to the repertory November 14 for eleven performances with new cast members, including Kristine Opolais and Angela Gheorghiu as Mimì; Ramón Vargas and Jean-François Borras as Rodolfo; Myrtò Papatanasiu, Susanna Phillips, and Sonya Yoncheva as Musetta; and Italian baritone Alessio Arduini as Marcello.
