Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay Offers International Business Education to Local Middle School Students

Tampa Bay, FL— Local students will spend time immersed in various global cultures learning how they impact the global economy as part of JA Tampa Bay’s ongoing curriculum. These lessons will be taught through the updated JA Global Marketplace® program, utilizing both in-classroom JA volunteers and JA’s digital curriculum, thanks to a generous grant from HSBC Bank USA, N.A. (HSBC).

JA Global Marketplace® is designed to provide practical information to middle school students about the key aspects of the global economy, what makes world trade work and how trade affects students’ daily lives. On day one, students learn how technology affects international business and by the last day, students have an understanding of trade, global workforce, business ethics, trade barriers and currency and exchange rates.

“With international commerce playing such an important role in our daily lives, this is an exciting time to teach students about the global economy and what it means for our country and the world,” said Richard George, President of Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay.  “This updated JA Global Marketplace® program allows students to learn about and understand other cultures; it opens their eyes to new perspectives and helps them understand how we’re all connected through business.”

The revised JA Global Marketplace® is the result of a $2 million investment from HSBC to reach students through Junior Achievement.  HSBC has partnered with Junior Achievement since 1942; the partnership is centered on its shared belief in the need to actively prepare and equip future generations to succeed.

“Partnering with Junior Achievement to update JA Global Marketplace® was a natural fit for HSBC. We have offices around the world so we understand the importance of teaching this generation about the global economy and interdependence of the workforce,” said John Warcop, SVP Collections. “Giving students a global education helps them to become well-rounded adults.”

JA Global Marketplace® supports national financial literacy standards, social studies standards of economics and national technology standards. Through the program’s blended learning model, teens have the opportunity for hands-on engagement through interactive media and collaborative tools to explore the global landscape.
