Juilliard Historical Performance, the School’s graduate-level full-tuition scholarship program for early music, enters its sixth performance season with a full schedule of concerts at Juilliard, throughout NYC, and on tour in 2014-15, anchored by performances from its primary period-instrument ensemble Juilliard415, along with the faculty ensemble Juilliard Baroque, and a roster of distinguished visiting guest artists from around the globe. Juilliard welcomes back visiting guest artists William Christie, Richard Egarr, and Jordi Savall. Making their debut appearances will be South African keyboardist Kristian Bezuidenhout in a Bach and Mozart program, and British violinist Rachel Podger in an all-Vivaldi program. Guest artists also include early music specialists Harry Bicket and members of The English Concert, conductors David Hill and Masaaki Suzuki, and Trio Holloway with John Holloway (violin), Jane Gower (dulcian), and Lars Ulrik Mortensen (harpsichord). Faculty members, violinists Monica Huggett and Robert Mealy and oboist Gonzalo Ruiz all lead Juilliard415 concerts.
Juilliard Historical Performance remains busy during summer 2014. Juilliard Baroque performs at the International Double Reed Society Convention on August 9, 2014 at 4 PM at New York’s Judson Memorial Church. Juilliard musicians return to Germany for a second collaboration with the Leopold-Mozart-Zentrum with concerts in Augsburg and Munich from August 13-19, 2014. They also return to William Christie’s summer festival in Thiré, France, Rencontres musicales en Vendée,from August 20-30, 2014, where they have appeared together with members of Les Arts Florissants since the festival’s founding three years ago. Juilliard Baroque and Juilliard415 will make their first appearances at the Utrecht Early Music Festival in The Netherlands, where Juilliard has the honor of being the first-ever conservatory-in-residence from August 30 – September 4, 2014. At Utrecht, Juilliard Baroque and Juilliard415 will perform; master classes will be offered; and Robert Mealy will give lectures. Members of Juilliard Baroque attending Utrecht will be cellist Phoebe Carrai, bassoonist Dominic Teresi, oboist Gonzalo Ruiz, and violinist Cynthia Roberts.
The new season opens with a trio of concerts by Masaaki Suzuki conducting Juilliard415 and Yale Schola Cantorum in Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Missa Dei Patris in Boston at Jordan Hall on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 8 PM; in New Haven, CT at Yale’s Woolsey Hall on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 7:30 PM; and a final performance on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at 5 PM in Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater. Zelenka’s rarely-heard Mass was composed in the last years of his life, his most prolific period of composition. Kristian Bezuidenhout makes his debut appearancedirecting from the pianoforte with Juilliard415 on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at 8 PM in Alice Tully Hall. The program features J.C. Bach’s Symphony in G Major, Op. 3, No. 6; W.F. Bach’s Sinfonia in D Minor, F. 65; Mozart’s Piano Concerto in E-flat, K. 271, ‘Jenamy’; Mozart’s Symphony in C Major, K. 425, ‘Linz’; and an additional Mozart work. Violinist Robert Mealy leads Juilliard415 in La Stravaganza: Virtuoso Music of the Italian Baroque with works by Italian composers Vivaldi and Locatelli on Friday, November 14, 2014 at 8 PM in Alice Tully Hall. Countertenor Eric Jurenas, described by The New York Times as an artist with “beautiful, well-supported tone and compelling expression,” is soloist. He is a master’s degree student at Juilliard. Highlights of Mr. Jurenas’ 2013-14 season included performances with the American Bach Soloists, Wolf Trap Opera, and a performance of J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with Simon Carrington. He covered David Daniels in the title role of the newly-commissioned production, Oscar, premiered at the Santa Fe Opera on July 27, 2013; he will again cover Mr. Daniels in Opera Philadelphia’s production in 2015. William Christie makes his only NYC appearance leading Juilliard singers and Juilliard415 in Handel’s La resurrezione, HWV 47, on Monday, December 8, 2014 at 8 PM in Alice Tully Hall. La resurrezione was one of Handel’s earliest oratorios; composed in Italy, the work had its premiere on Easter Day in 1708 at the palace of Marchese Ruspoli, a member of the Arcadian Academy and a patron of Handel. The text for the oratorio, a dramatic telling of the story of Easter, was written by Carlo Capece. Monica Huggett leads Juilliard415 in an all-Beethoven program: Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus, Op. 43 (Creatures of Prometheus); Romance No. 2 in F Major (violinist selected by competition); and Symphony No. 4 on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at 5 PM in Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater. Jordi Savall makes his annual appearance leading Juilliard415 in a program titled “In the Charm of Nature” on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 8 PM in Alice Tully Hall. The concert features Leclair’s Ouverture to Scylla et Glaucus (Ovidio Metamorphoses); Geminiani’s The Inchanted Forrest; Telemann’s Wassermusik, “Hamburger Ebb und Flut,” TWV55:C3; and a suite of Rameau’s music that Savall has titled, Orages, tonnerres, et tremblements de terre (storm, thunder, and earthquakes). Juilliard Historical Performance welcomes British violinist Rachel Podger who makes her first appearance leading Juilliard415 in a program of single and multiple violin concerti by Vivaldi on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 8 PM. (Venue to be announced.) Over the last two decades, Ms. Podger has established herself as a leading interpreter of the music of the Baroque and Classical periods and holds numerous award-winning recordings to her name ranging from the early 17th century music to Mozart and Haydn.
Juilliard faculty member, oboist Gonzalo Ruiz, leads the winds of Juilliard415 in a Loud Band concert on Friday, March 20, 2015 at 8 PM in Juilliard’s Paul Hall. Historically, loud bands performed outdoors or in large halls or to accompany dancing, and they generally featured three shawms and one sackbut. Monica Huggett leads Juilliard415 in “Concerti bizzarri,” (“Strange Concerti”) a two-part concert featuring concerti on different and unusual combinations of featured instruments. The concerti will be by Telemann, Graupner, Dittersdorf, Johann Ludwig Bach, and Vivaldi. The concert is presented on the Music Before 1800 series on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at 4 PM and 6 PM at Corpus Christi Church. For information on tickets, go to mb1800.org.
David Hill, principal conductor of Yale Schola Cantorum, leads the ensemble and Juilliard415 in Beethoven’s Mass in C; Haydn’s Symphony No. 94, “The Surprise”; and a new work (to be announced) on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 7:30 PM at Yale’s Woolsey Hall in New Haven, CT and on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 8 PM in Alice Tully Hall. Juilliard415 makes its debut at the Boston Early Music Festival when it collaborates with the Royal Academy of Music, conductor Masaaki Suzuki, and violinist Rachel Podger in an all-Bach program with performances at Jordan Hall in Boston on June 13, 2015 at 2 PM; Alice Tully Hall on June 15, 2015 at 8 PM; and at Leipzig Thomaskirche on June 19, 2015, as part of the Leipzig Bach Festival. Leipzig Thomaskirche isJ.S. Bach’s church (and his final resting place). A concert in London at Duke’s Hall at the Royal Academy of Music on June 21, 2015 concludes the tour.
FREE Lunchtime Concerts at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church – “Tuesdays at Twelve”
Juilliard Historical Performance musicians continue their free lunchtime series at nearby Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (65th Street and Central Park West, NYC) this season. The hour-long concerts in the series – October 7, 2014; December 16, 2014; February 24, 2015; and April 21, 2015 – all on Tuesdays at 12:00 Noon – feature chamber music on period instruments in the 110-year-old church, home of the celebrated Bach Vespers series. These concerts are free, no tickets are required. The series is an extension of Juilliard’s longtime, free lunchtime performance series that takes place during the school year on Wednesdays in Alice Tully Hall.
Juilliard Baroque
The faculty ensemble, Juilliard Baroque, performs at the International Double Reed Society Convention on August 9, 2014 and gives a Juilliard concert on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at 8 PM in Paul Hall. The ensemble featuring Gonzalo Ruiz (oboe), Kathryn Montoya (oboe and recorder), Dominic Teresi (bassoon), Robert Nairn (violone), Avi Stein (harpsichord), and Charlie Weaver (theorbo) performs works by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Zelenka. Residencies and Private Events
Residencies are an important part of Juilliard’s Historical Performance Program and give Juilliard musicians a chance to work closely with a ‘who’s who’ list of early music specialists.
Harry Bicket, artistic director of The English Concert, returns to lead a public master class on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 4 PM in Juilliard’s Paul Hall. FREE; tickets are required. Mr. Bicket brings members of The English Concert to Juilliard for a private coaching day on Friday, October 24, 2014.
Richard Egarr makes three visits to Juilliard in the 2014-15 season. He returns for a residency the week of October 27, 2014 and for two residencies in the spring semester from February 3 – 7, 2015 and for the week of April 27, 2015.
Juilliard415 has been invited back to perform for The Bohemians (New York Musicians Club) 108th annualconcert series at the Kosciuszko Foundation (15 East 65th Street) on Monday, November 3, 2014 for a program of chamber music. Founded in 1907 by pianist Rafael Joseffy, The Bohemians is an exclusive NYC-based society comprised of musicians and music lovers whose objectives include furthering the cause of music and musicians, advancing the careers of young musicians, and supporting the Musicians’ Foundation – a tax-exempt charitable organization aiding professional musicians in need.
