NEGOTIATIONS AT CROSSROADS: CAN DIPLOMACY WITH IRAN AND THE PALESTINIANS SUCCEED?
Join us for a discussion on Mideast diplomacy and Israel’s security with the former head of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Intelligence Gen. (ret.) Amos Yadlin. Yadlin served for over 40 years in the IDF, including nine as a member of the IDF General Staff, and as Chief of Defense Intelligence. He has published articles in The New York Times, Washington Post, Foreign Policy and The Wall Street Journal, among other, and is currently Director of Tel Aviv University’s Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), Israel’s leading strategic think tank. Yadlin talks withEthan Bronner, deputy national editor of the New York Times. He has served as Jerusalem bureau chief for the paper, following four years as the newspaper’s deputy foreign editor.

Stroll down Second Avenue, the famed “Yiddish rialto,” and explore its connections to the modern day East Village and Lower East Side. Observe the names of famous performers of the Yiddish theater on the Second Avenue Deli’s “Starwalk,” visit the Community Synagogue and see Congregation Adas Yisroel Anshe Meseritz, a tenement-style synagogue described as a “little jewel.”

THE PHANTOM HOLOCAUST
Between 1930s and the late 1980s the Soviet Union created a large number of films about the Holocaust and Nazi anti-Semitism. Mostly forgotten or banned, and unknown until recently, they attest to how a totalitarian regime chose to remember—or forget—the crimes and catastrophe of the extermination of the Jews. Focusing on work by both celebrated and unknown Soviet directors and screenwriters, Olga Gershenson has written The Phantom Holocaust: Soviet Cinema and Jewish Catastrophe, the first book about all Soviet narrative films dealing with the Holocaust from 1938 to 1991. By uncovering little known works, Gershenson makes a significant contribution to the international Holocaust filmography. Gershenson will discuss the films and show clips including Professor Mamlock, The Unvanquished and Eastern Corridor.

Ponder the central moral and historical issues of the twentieth century through the story of Gertrude van Tijn, a German-born social worker who helped organize Jewish emigration from Nazi territory. Facing difficult moral choices, she deployed a multitude of methods to enable thousands of Jews to escape with their lives, until her deportation to Westerbork in 1943. Bernard Wasserstein is the author of The Ambiguity of Virtue: Gertrude van Tijn and the Fate of the Dutch Jews(Harvard University Press; March 24, 2014). NOTE: Part of a new series of talks taking place at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, 36 Battery Place.
