Jazz Club of Sarasota presents world-class musicians for Jazz at Two concerts on Fridays from 2:00-4:00 p.m.; Schedule through 2015 includes alum of prominent bands, international tours and festivals, Riverwalk Jazz  

 

SARASOTA, FL: The Jazz Club of Sarasota continues Jazz at Two, its longstanding concert series that brings performances by world-class musicians for a modest admission fee. The concerts are presented on Friday afternoons through April 15, 2016 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 3975 Fruitville Road. Admission, set at $10 for Jazz Club members and $15 for nonmembers, includes a one-dollar contribution to the Jazz Club Scholarship Fund, according to Peg Pluto, Jazz Club president.

November 6:  TOM ELLISON QUARTET. Tom Ellison, reeds & vocals; Judi Glover, piano; Don Mopsick, bass; Bob Stone, drums.

Tom Ellison has performed with such respected artists as Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, John Denver, Henry Mancini, Andy Williams, Woody Herman, Jimmy Dorsey, Aretha Franklin, the Temptations and Lou Rawls. He leads the modern jazz quintet Hip Pocket and plays in the Naples Jazz Orchestra. Bob Stone, founder and musical director of the Naples Jazz Orchestra, led the Bob Stone Big Band in Chicago for 15 years before moving to Florida in 1990. Don Mopsick has impressive credentials with top-level musicians and is perhaps best known for his 19-year gig with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band and Riverwalk Jazz public radio series. Judi Glover, a keyboardist, vocalist, music director and arranger, has been a member of Alex Glover & Company since 1987.

 

November 20: MIKE MARKAVERICH TRIO. Mike Markaverich, piano; Johnny Moore, drums; Dave Trefethen, bass.

The Mike Markaverich Trio plays music from the Great American Songbook, movies and jazz standards. Markaverich is a world-recognized jazz pianist with over two decades of professional experience at major festivals and venues. His repertoire includes blues, boogie-woogie, bop and Broadway. Johnny Moore has been a professional musician since 1970, playing with such jazz greats as Clark Terry, Herb Ellis and Jay McShane; touring nationally with the Gaslight Gang; and playing in the back-up band for the Four Freshman. Besides his performances as a bassist Dave Trefethen is also a talented guitarist who plays in the tradition of Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel and Tal Farlow.

 

November 27: NATE NAJAR ALL-STAR QUARTET. Nate Najar, guitar; James Suggs, trumpet; John Lamb, bass; Mark Feinman, drums.

St. Petersburg native Nate Najar has received international acclaim as a fingerstyle guitarist, using a classical guitar to play jazz music. The musician/producer/composer has performed for international festivals, concerts and television and composed for film. He regularly places at the top of jazz music charts for his artistry. Trumpeter James Suggs has played throughout the U.S., Europe and Latin America, relocating to Florida after eight years in Buenos Aires. John Lamb is a legendary bassist renowned for his years with Duke Ellington among others. Mark Feinman was part of a big-band toured Italy and France, including the Umbria Jazz Festival and Jazz a Juan in Juan Les Pins.

The Jazz Club of Sarasota, founded in 1980, is one of the most active jazz clubs in the United States.
